Edema, anyone?

Recommended Posts

For years I have had swollen legs and ankles at the end of the day. I have a desk job, and always thought it was because of my weight.

I went to my doctor a couple of weeks ago and was told that I have edema, and she suggested that I get support hose. There are places on my legs that actually feel sore. At first I thought I might have varicose veins, but she saw no varicosity. Not only are they sore, sort of bruised feeling, I guess, but they also itch sometimes.

My doctor gave me a cream, and I have been using Aveeno, which seems to help with the itching, but what I didn't think to ask her was if this could effect my ability to lose weight.

I'm walking at least three times a week, and that doesn't bother me.

The weight resistance I do doesn't bother me, either.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Debbie

I suffer from Water retention which shows up in my legs and ankles as a bit of edema. The doctor prescribed Lasix (water pill) and it helps most days. I do suffer from very sore legs. It's like my muscles ache and just don't want to function very well. Makes me wonder if it is because of the edema or something else.

It's been a while since you posted this so I'm wondering if you have more information now.

Dianna,

I went to my doctor again about two weeks ago, and she sent me for ultrasounds on both legs. She told me I might have peripheral vascular disease, and gave me antibiotics for the itching, which I haven't used, though I know I should. The itching, she said, could be a skin infection. .

The results of my ultrasound are negative normal. I received a call from my doctor's office today, and that's what the message said.

I have an appointment to see her in May.

I weighed myself last weekend, and had lost a pound. My legs do feel better with the combination of the support hose, and the increase in a diuretic combined with a blood pressure medication I have been taking.

I still want to find out if this has affected my weight at all. I feel like I've lost some since last weekend, but haven't checked. Thank you for responding to my post. .

Debbie.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
