Changing Portion Size Perception

Recommended Posts

I was banded about 6 months ago. Recently I've begun noticing how my perceptions of what a portion size have changed since being banded.

I went out with friends the other night, and made a pig of myself. I felt gross, and a bit of a failure for stuffing myself.

A friend asked if the food was ok? I told him it was, but I ate too much. He looked shocked, and said that I "had barely touched it", and he thought there was something wrong with the food.< /p>

I ran through my head everything I'd eaten, and realized that even though post band it felt like I'd eaten a lot, it was a fraction of what I would have eaten pre-band. It wasn't until then that I even noticed that I'd only eaten about half of what was on my plate.

I just thought it was interesting how my perceptions have changed. They still need work, but I definitely feel I'm moving in the right direction.

OMG this is exactly how i felt on wed. I was really hungry all day. Well we went out to dinner i ordered some bbq chicken wings. Well i went to town i felt like i eat and eat and eat. Well when i got done eating i said to my husband that i feel really bad i eat so much. He had a weird look on his face and then he said honey you only eat 4 small chicken wings. I realized i hardly eat but i normally only eat about 2 chicken wings. And then i thought even on a really bad day banded i only eat 4 chicken wings. I can remember when i could eat a whole dozen of chicken wings and several slices of pizza with no problem.

I'm 2+ months out and still struggle with this most days. I am careful now to put smaller portions on a smaller plate and still invariably take too much food. It's nice to think that in 3 more months it will become second nature.

Sometimes I'll make my dinner plate, and my hubby will look at me like, what are you crazy? I scrape half onto his, and we just laugh. I guess my eyes are still bigger than my stomach.

My family and I have this running gag: Whenever we go out I bet them that I can eat the biggest thing on the menu; with a wink and a smile of course, and they just roll their eyes, and say go for it.

But you know what shocks me? Seeing how much my family eats! As I eat off of a dessert plate I watch them fill up their big plates, and go for seconds. I hate to say it but it kind of bothers me. I want to scream, 'You're eating too much!'

No kidding! My guys are all healthy, not overweight guys, but the stuff the stuff in is amazing. They will sometimes take a bite that is 1/2 of my meal, it seems.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
