Is it normal to lose almost 30lbs in the first week?

No one can say what is actually "normal" but unless the person is over 400lbs I would say YES that is way too fast. But it depends on each person, what is too much for one is not enough for another!

I am not over 400lbs and I am almost 4 weeks out and have lost almost 40lbs now. Had my first doc visit and he said the band was working perfectly for me. I was just wandering if anyone else had this experience.

Wow! That sure is very fast weight loss. I don't think it's normal (that is it's not typical results). I would talk to your doctor about this. Alot of what you lost may have been Fluid retention. Best of luck on your journey!

I don't think it's normal either, but if all feels well and your doctor says it's okay, then don't worry. Wow, that's amazing!

Wow- not typical, but if you have all the energy you need, and your doctor isn't concerned-- then I say enjoy the hell out of it!!

Are you clothes just falling off you? ;-)

Well, there's not much about the Band experience that you CAN consider "normal"....people lose at widely variable rates.

That IS pretty dramatic, though....and it is a very good indication that the "restrictive" mode of WLS was the right one for you.

Of course, do exactly what YOUR surgeon says to do, but consider slowing the process down a little bit, if possible. Losing weight too fast can be detrimental for some people, dependant upon your age, weight, and overall physical condition.

I did not have a pre-op diet and I lost 18lbs the first week after banding. I did slow down after that, though, and am at 41lbs at 9 weeks out. I agree wit staying in touch with your doctor. Keep up the good work!

30lbs in a week? Wow bless you. If your doctor feels that you are doing ok then I wouldn't worry about it. I was banded in Oct. 2009 and I'm down 72lbs. You might lose it fast at first but you will slow down eventually. Don't get upset when it slows down.

Most of what you lose that first week is Water. I wouldn't worry, it won't continue that way, so enjoy!!! I lost 9 1/2 the first week and thought it was huge until I watched Biggest Loser and saw that many of them lose that much every week. Oh well I don't see myself working out 8 hours a day ever so I will take my one pound a week. Congrats on your weight loss and congrats on your new chapter in your life. Hugs.......

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
