Hi, it's an upper GI. They want you to go to the doctor for this icky procedure. I believe you have to drink this chalky substance so they can check the upper portion of your intestines to make sure everything is cleared for surger. I hope I don't have to do one. I hear the substance is nauseating.

Best of Luck!!

Upper GI Series. You'll stand for part of the test on a tilt table and drink a barium "shake" - it's like hold a cup of beach sand and tastes like vanilla/banana chalk...never the less it is very filling so you won't be hungry the rest of the day. It comes out the other end just was white and heavy as it went in!

They aren't testing your intestines. They are going to look at your stomach. Also, they will test your esophagus and how you swallow.

Lol. Yeah, don't be suprised when your poo turns white. You'll have to drink a lot of Water after the test so you won't get constipated.

I guess you can put it that way. They will be looking into your insides. I didn't like having it. The barium tasted nasty, and I had my bra off with a hospital gown on. There was a cute guy that was helping with the test. I hate not wearing a bra. So, that was kind of embarrassing, lol.

Think regular milk of magnesia only much, much thicker. Bleh. Had one done probably close to 20 years ago and would have killed for a hint of banana taste. LOL The good side is that the procedure is painless and I don't recall any needles or anything. They did find that I have a baby or mini hyatle hernia.

Hey fellow banders. Where and how do I get that weight loss ticker located on the bottom of your responses and posts. It's almost like it's a part of your signature. I'd love one to count down my weightloss goals.

Happy Losing to you all!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
