Do You miss food?

OK... I love food. I am so scared that I will be so depressed about not getting to eat certain things I enjoy now that I will not be happy about getting the Lap Band. Do you get over craving food?

Everyone is so different when it comes to food. We all need to eat to stay alive, but sometimes there is an emotional attachment to food.

I can only speak for myself and about my own experience. I don't think I have much of an emotional attachment. Yes, I did overeat during stressful times in life and out of boredom and such, but mostly I just over ate because food tasted so darn good and my stomach could hold a lot. Sometimes I do get "head hunger" when I can't eat something I think would taste good, but I know most of those things are not good for me and made me fat. I just accept the fact that I can no longer eat like that and go on about my life. If there is a strong emotional attachment I think it would help to talk to some sort of therapist about it.

First of all, I feel your pain. I, too, am a food addict. :tongue2: I've always dreamt about food. I used to Plan my day, evening, vacations, etc around what I'm going to eat, and where. Sometimes, I still do. I subscribe to many cooking magazines, and I buy cookbooks like others buy romance novels. I can food shop for hours! :blink:The grocery store is never a quick little jaunt for me. Do I wish I could sink my teeth into a big fat juicy burger and stuff my face with fries? Absolutely! Be able to devour a plate of Pasta and breadsticks? Hell ya! But I can't. These are the facts. And sometimes it totally sucks. BUT!! I look at my results, how much better I feel, the smaller clothes in my closet, etc... and I KNOW this is all worth it. :wub: I still dream about food - (Broasted chicken and Pasta the most.) And I probably always will. It's who I am. But NOT eating some of your favorites, or not eating as much as you used to, gets easier and easier. Trust me on this.

As far as cookbooks and romance novels go, I watch the Food Network as if it were porn. :wub:

Funny btrieger!! I watch the Food Network a lot more than I used to. But now I seem to notice how much butter and salt they use in their recipes. Ellie Krieger is one exception, though.

The good thing about cravings is that they don't last. If you can tough it out without giving in, you feel so much better!

btrieger - I agree with the food Network! I am on day 6 of my pre-op diet and I can't stop watching food shows....even that Man VS. Food program on the Travel Channel where he has a mass eating challenge at the end. The first few days on the pre-op diet I was so hungry that I considered licking my TV!

My husband thinks that I am crazy!

Lordy, me, I've gotta keep my mind off food as much as possible. Otherwise I'll eat the TV, not just lick it!:scared2:

I'm three weeks post-op and I do miss food. I think part of it is I've been on clear, then full liquids, then pureed for a month (counting pre-op). I'm hoping that when I move on to more regular foods and have my first fill it won't be so bad. I started grieving for food as soon as I made the decision to have the surgery. Food makes me happy. I'm definitely a food addict. I expect to be able to enjoy food again soon, but believe this tool will help me feel satisfied with smaller portions and deter me from gorging on junk food. Let's face it - huge portions and junk food was killing us. Eating smaller portions and dropping some foods won't!

I had my post-op appointment today and was given the clearance to try real food.

I think we all love food for one reason or another or else we would not have an obesity problem. For me the band has been about changing my relationship with food. I used to eat cause it was good, I could, it comforted, it soothed... now food is nourishment, I still eat some things I am not supposed to occasionally, but the band keeps me from going overboard. Would I love to chow down a cheesecake or pizza? You bet, but when I eat those things now I have to do it in moderation. You will have your cravings and you will have to figure out what your food triggers are and work on changing them, but like everyone else has said, when you see the difference in your appearance, the way you feel, the energy you pick up, it becomes less important. At least it has for me. Good luck.

Before surgery (Feb 18/10) I was to the point that I had begun to actually HATE food. It controlled my life and practically my every waking moment. I was sick and tired of always wanting to eat whether I was hungry or not and trying to figure out WHAT I wanted to eat and WHY. Well, I never did figure it all out. Instead, I got banded. Now my days are no longer spent obsessing about food. I am a devotee of Calorie King and faithfully log every single thing I put in my mouth every day, along with whatever exercise I'm doing (usually walking). Some days I think my dedication to logging my food intake has taken the place of my obsession with food itself.

I am also a staunch advocate of low carb living, and I'll tell ya - nothing kills sugar cravings like a low carb diet. I'm convinced that's why I no longer want the chips, ice cream, pies and fries that I used to salivate over.

You know, you don't have to give up your favourite foods forever - know that eventually, once you've reached your goal (or even before, if you can handle it), you can re-introduce small amounts of your favourite naughty foods back into your diet if you want to. However, that's a slippery slope for most people who have been morbidly obese... I know I'll never have another bag of chips in my house because, like the ad says, I can't eat just one.

Great attitude about it Bobbie!

I think that sometimes just one bite or a little taste can satisfy when you miss something. It can also be a slippery slope. It depends. I have been to a couple of birthday parties since being banded and I know cake does the same thing to me as bread .... becomes a painful blob of dough feeling. But, one bite satisfies the craving and sometimes with just that one bite I realize it doesn't really taste as good as I thought.

I miss the taste of certain things!! For sure...but I am so grateful for the lapband...I don't regret it a bit!!!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
