4 Days Post Op... My journey has begun

Recommended Posts

I had my band surgery on Friday. The only surprise was going from an outpatient procedure to having to stay overnight at the hospital due to slow drainage into my intestines. I'm very happy with my doctor's professionalism, not sending me home and making sure my upper GI was where it should be. The last few days have been pretty good, feeling stronger everyday. Not feeling hungry as I follow the required clear to full liquid diet.

I was planning to go back to work in two days, but may opt to take it easy the rest of the week... Any issues with going back to work too soon?

I'm happy that the procedure is complete and my life changing adventure has begun!! Yippie!

hey taylor! i had my surgery on friday, too! and i had to stay overnight, too! only my overnight was required by insurance. they didn't test my "flow" of liquids so to speak until the next day before discharging me. things have been fine so far but i'm finally starting to feel hunger pains and it's awful!!! i wanna eat something!!!! not sure how you are feeling physically but i still feel pretty sore. i'd recommend taking it easy before jumping back into work. but that's just me.

Hello,

I also had my band in on Friday! I had a really rough weekend, nothing was staying down liquids and pain meds... but with a quick ER trip another day in recovery I am home now and things are looking up.

I am planing on going back into work on Thursday.

Hopefully that will be enough time.

Keep me posted with how your doing, I would love to hear your stories.

Hello all,

I had my surgery last Monday (3/8) and things are going very well. I am okay with the liquid diet, the first 2 days I was really not very hungry. The only thing I would change is not going back to work after 2 days of being off. Not a very good idea. I was sore, I work at my desk, but sitting up all day was challenging. I am mentally scared to eat anything. I have been on shakes and broth and Jello since my surgery. Its been okay but I am getting nervous about eating.

Hello I also had my surgery on friday. I am feeling pretty good I am also starting to get hungry but staying on this liquid diet. I have a desk job and I'm not scheduled to come back until Thursday but I am trying to decide if I want to do a half day tomorrow and Thursday instead. I am also a single mom of 2 so I have been having my kids stay with family and they are coming home tomorrow for me to take care of and lift alone.... More worried about that the work... 11months and 3! Good luck everybody!

Thank you for all the comments... I was very sore my first few days, but have been feeling a little better each day. The full liquid diet is going well...not overly hungry, just limited on variations of what I can have.

I've decided to take the remainder of the week off to heal and really be ready to return to work. :scared2:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
