My WL Journey Has Begun

Recommended Posts

Hello All, I am a Mother to two of the best boys in the world and married to my soul mate. He loves me unconditionally, but I found in the recent years that I have stopped loving myself. Because of this I find it hard to let anyone love me. Even though I am overweight and classified as Morbidly Obese I currently do not suffer from any comorbidity, however I know it is in my very near future if I do not take action now. I hope to have the banding procedure done by 8/2010 before this disorder takes it toll on my body and organs. I am a nature lover and absolutely love the outdoors and its natural wildlife. My goal is to one day kayak in my favorite place in the word - Yellowstone National Park with my three boys at my side. I am...Angel and this is the beginning of my weight lose journey. The journey to start loving myself again and to live a new healthy lifestyle.

Hi Angel and welcome. My name is Lori and I am still in the informational stage of my journey. This Thursday I will be going to the Doctor and letting him know that I am ready. I am not sure how long it will be after that. Good luck on your journey and let us know how you are doing.

Hi Lori, I'm right there with you. It was a relief to actually discuss it with my Family Physician and get the ball rollen. I have attended the free seminar. My insurance requires me to complete a 6 month Physician followed diet. I'm only in month 1 of that. In May I will begin to schedule all of my other visits with my Surgeon, Dietician, etc. So I hope to have my surgery by 08/10.

I know this is the right choice for me in my WL journey. I'll be glad when the actual date gets here.

I wish you the best of luck Lori. Keep us posted!!

My husband is in The Army so we have Tri care prime for our insurance. I know they will cover the surgery, but I am not sure what steps need to be done before I can get a date. I am nervous and I think I change my mind every hour. I just find myself coming back to this site, and realize this is the best option for me.

In the beginning, I found the best thing for me was to give my insurance company a call and get the facts from them. When I decided on my Surgeon they also called and verified what I already knew. My Surgeon and her office staff have been awesome so far. She has a dietician and a psychologist in her office. They will schedule everything for me. I will begin my office visits in May and then be ready for my Surgery as soon as my 6 month "Physician followed" diet is over. I'm looking at my 6 month diet as a "getting ready" for banding phase. I'm starting to drink more Water and practicing healthier eating habits. It can't hurt, right! Well good luck on your journey! Keep us posted!!

Hello Angel and welcome. I was banded a little over 2 years ago and am now maintaining a healthy weight.

I think the idea of changing your diet and lifestyle now, before the surgery is an excellent idea. It is exactly what I did. My surgeon told me that if I couldn't change my lifestyle before surgery I would never do it afterwards either, and he was probably right. By the time the band was fitted I had lost 75 lbs and was ona roll. I didn't have to deal with the forbidden fruit of choccies and cakies and bikkies because I had already dealt with those demons and the band helps me not to do the backsliding thing. I've lost weight before but I always managed to put it all back on again - plus a bit more for good measure. The and stops that happening to me now and I no longer live in fear of a binge or splurge.

The only thing I would say is try to ditch the "diet" idea. A diet mentality usually includes an end date - what you need to do is change your lifestyle for life, including what you eat and what you do (exercise is the dirty word I'm trying to avoid using). Change the way you live and you will change the way you look and feel. The band won't do it for you but it's a fantastic tool when used properly.

Good luck with your 6 month diet/lifestyle change and enjoy your band when you get it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
