3 Days after surgery and throwing up everything!

Recommended Posts

I am on my third day post op. I can't keep anything down including the pain medication...

Is this normal? Will it eventually go back to normal?

Kris, the same exact thing happened to me 3 days out, I went straight to the dr's office. During surgery they put in 3cc's; that coupled with the extreme swelling I had was causing the problem. They took out most of the fluid...about 2.4cc's and I felt immediate relief. Another person banded on the same day with the same dr and same fill had no problems, so its pretty individual. Be sure to call asap as a precaution...you can get dehydrated very quickly.

My doctor said to call right away if I couldn't even keep fluids down. That happened to me on the afternoon of day 3 after surgery, too. But I had no fill put in my band. They gave me some meds for nausea, and I was fine by the next day.

I felt the same thing, and I ended up going to the ER. They accidentally left 2 ccs of Fluid in the band. The Dr. removed the fluid in the ER and I immidiately felt relief and was able to drink fluids. I would go check if there is any fluid in the band. The swelling and fluid left in the band can be preventing you from keeping anything down.

You really need to call your Surgeon about this right away.

I mean, right now. You don't want to mess around with this.

I had lap-band surgery on 3/11/10...I was having a problem with feeling nauseous, I finally figured out it was gas pain that was making me feel sick, so I started to get up more & walk up & down my street,etc...and that helped a lot. Also, I can't drink the Protein Shakes yet, they seem to make me feel sick, but my doctor gave me liquid pain meds & anti-nausea meds, which really helped me the first 2 days. I am on my 4 day post op, and have NO pain, no nausea, and minimal gas.*

I had my surgery on March 11, 2010. I had one incident with nausea and after I got my prescription filled, I felt better. The walking helps alot. I am still dealing with the gas but I am walking more. I am no longer taking the pain meds. I also noticed that the chocolate Protein shake did not work for me. I hope you went to see your doctor. You don't want the band to slip with the throwing up.

Hope all is well,

Lorraine Lane

Kris, It's been 11 hours since you posted.

I hope you called your surgeon's office.

Mine told me to call immediately if I vomited at all.

i'm three days post op, too. i'm not having any trouble keeping liquids or meds down, but i have noticed that the Protein Shakes make me feel tight in the chest and almost sick like when i try to drink them. and i'm drinking slow. i noticed that is the same problem catalyst is having so i'm glad to know i'm not the only one. i hope you did call your doc though to see what the problem is with not being able to keep anything down.

Three days post op all I was allowed by my doctor was Clear Liquids. Did most of you get to have more than that? I wasn't allowed protien shakes until one week. I didn't have any issues with nausea or vomiting. I now wonder if that is why my dr's orders seemed stricter than some of the others I read here. Definately seek medical attn, don't wait. Keep us posted.

Thank You to everyone. Once I saw the "call your doctor asap" I knew it wasn't normal.

I called and I was admitted into the ER yesterday morning two hours later... I just got home this morning.

At least I'm not dehydrated anymore. Well will see how today goes.

Thanks for everyone's support!

Kris, I am so glad you went in! Dehydration can set up a vicious cycle, and nipping it in the bud is so important.

Are you feeling better today?

I kinda had a similar problem, but not exactly. I would feel very nauceous after I took my antibiotics, I had to break them apart and take em like that. Then about 30 minutes later I'd be in the bathroom dry heaving. It was like i was puking but nothing would come out but spit and burps. So I don't know what my deal was. This didn't start happening until about 3 days post op. It hasn't happened in a few days, so i'm thinking my stomach was just to small and swollen to digest it. Hopefully all goes well for you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
