Hi

I'm 11 days post-op, and don't feel weak. My dietician wanted me to have 60gm Protein / day, while on fluids and then mushies. Did yours say only 20?

I think any of the well-known multi-vitamins. I chose kiddy chewables cause the others are so huge, making sure they had enough Iron.< /p>

I hope you feel better soon.

Barb

I stayed weak for a very long time. I think everyone is different when it comes to stuff like that. As far as vits. my Dr. told me to take Centrum chewables. They taste pretty tangy/orange at first, but not too bad after a few.

agreed. I was told to have a shake twice a day that had about 30 grams of Protein per serving so at least 60 grams from shakes alone a day.

Concurring with those that say your Protein grams are too low. Up your protein. Centrum complete chewables are what I use for my Vitamin. The taste isn't great, but it has everything in it!

How many calories (approximately) are you eating every day? Make sure you are getting enough (I know it can be difficult). I am also on the mushie/blended stage, but my doctor has me eating 5-6 meals a day (2 of mine are Protein shakes, and rest are about 1/4 c Protein and 1/4 c fruit or veggie each).

Maybe post a typical daily menu and we can offer some tips?

As far as Vitamins... I just ordered some chewables from bariatriceating.com-- I haven't gotten them yet, so we'll see how they are! (Right now I'm taking a liquid that I got from some bariatric website, but I can't remember which one! It's pretty gross.)

Do you maybe mean that you are limiting carbs, not Protein? If not---I'd really try to bump up the Protein quite a bit.

It's not unusual to feel weak and cruddy for a couple of weeks after surgery, but you want to be sure to do everything you can do to promote good healing and recovery.

That would include getting plenty of Fluid, getting adequate protein (at least 65 g/day), taking a good bariatric Vitamin (I like Bariatric Advantage chewables), and advancing your diet as advised by your doctor.

My doc had me on purees pretty much from the outset---but nixed things like creamed Soups, cream of wheat, and so on. Instead, the focus was on protein purees--and I felt great.

Cream of wheat can fill a belly--but it doesn't really offer much nutritionally, and has the downside of being carby enough that a blood sugar spike can be followed by a plummet (and weakness).

Another poster suggested you post what you eat in a day. That would be helpful, for feedback.

But really, if you're concerned about your weakness, a phone call to your doctor would be a good idea, too. (I wish you'd been given more guidance, preop, about nutrition and vitamins--I hate to see you feeling awful now because you haven't been given enough information.)

I agree with the others.....your Protein level is way too low. I was advised that after my surgery I need to get 60-80 grams MINIMUM of Protein a day. I need to do that through lean meats, Beans, and even low-carb Protein drinks. A daily multi-Vitamin is also a must!

Please talk with your dietician and see what he/she says about your weakened state. That can't be good for you! Good luck!

Definitely, that Protein count seems too low...I'm on purees as well, with a daily goal of 70 to 89 grams of Protein.< /p>

At just over 2 weeks out, I'm perhaps not quite back to the Energizer Bunny stage, but I'm not feeling weak, even after working out.

Perhaps you misunderstood your surgeon/nutritionist...I think my list says that if I have Cream of Wheat, it has to be supplemented with unflavored Protein powder. It's definitely worth a phone call, rather than you go on feeling this way.

Hope it turns around for you soon!

Christine

My doctor says 60-80 grams of Protein a day. You could be getting too little Iron. You may want to have your doctor check you for anemia.

As for Vitamins, my doctor requires us to take a bariatric Vitamin. I didn't like the Bariatric Advantage samples that he gave me, so I ordered samples of Celebrate Vitamins - they are bariatric vitamins as well. The chewables are actually pretty yummy. And the vitamin for bandsters has iron in it, many vitamins don't.

I would recommend you talk to your doctor. I don't think you should be that weak.

Call your Doctor.

If you are really THAT weak, where you cannot walk more than a few steps, you need to speak with your surgeon right away.

Seriously. Call your Surgeon.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
