Problem taking Prevacid medication

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on Friday, 3/12. The doctor prescribed me prevacid and said it's very important for me to take for several weeks after the surgery. I was instructed to open the capsule and take the contents (mini bead like) over a spoon of liquid. I tried this for the third time and it's just horrible. It's making me gag, I'm spilling the beads everywhere, they are getting stuck in my teeth, etc! Does anyone else have to take these? Do you open them first? Any pointers?

Thanks.

Are you on clear liquid or into the full liquid stage...since drs vary so much I just was wondering. If you are on full liquid mix the contents with something a bit more viscous--pudding or apple sauce. It will stick to the food more and slide down rather than get stuck all over your mouth.

I was able to take all pills in full form after my surgery so this grinding of pills and opening capsules isn't something I had to deal with.

Call your pharmacy-- so many meds can be in liquid form.

you also need to call your doctor and tell him about this .

Keep us posted on how you are doing ..

My pharmacist worked with my doctor on my meds. They prescribed prevacid which is a large strawberry flavored tablet. You place it in your mouth and it dissolves. Great alternative!

Another thought: I have terrible trouble with any pills that are compressed tablets or caplets, but do just fine with Gelatin capsules that are filled with those little beads. As long as I take a good drink (sipping something warm afterward is even better!) when swallowing, that cap dissolves in no time--I've never had a stuck incident.

You might want to try simply taking it as intended. You may be very pleasantly surprised

I would love to just take the pill. I am doing so with my thyroid medicine but that pill is so tiny. This one is a capsule..I thought I would try but that I should follow instructions for the first few days since it is fairly bigger than my thyroid med.

I am on full liquids BTW...

The dissolvable strawberry tablet sounds good too...

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try them all.

my doc gave me prevacid in something called a "solutab" that dissolves on your tongue. maybe you can call your doc and see if they can give you the meds in a different form since it is available in such.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
