What do you drink your shakes out of?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Quick question for you: what do you drink your Protein Shakes out of? I know for the first three weeks post-op I'm supposed to drink two ounces every hour. Do you make this up two ounces at a time? Do you make up an entire work-day's worth (16oz) and then gradually sip 2 ounces at a time? If so, where did you find a graduated bottle that tells you when you've had your two ounces?

Tips? Suggestions?

Thanks!

This is the first I have ever heard of anyone drinking by the hour. It seems like a lot of work and prep time to make a bunch of 2 ounce shakes.

On my pre-op diet I had to drink 5 shakes. One every 3 hours but they were 10 ounces.

I think the 2-ounces-every-hour thing is designed for those who have difficulty---to ensure that they get adequate Fluid. (Check with your doctor about this.)

I never had any problem at all with liquids---so I've simply made my shakes and had them from regular cups and bottles (depending on the type; I have a warm chocolate shake in a coffee mug, and a fruity one mixed with Crystal Light that I drink from a sports bottle throughout the day, when I make it).

I'd just mix a whole shake and if you can't drink it, put it back in the fridge. I never heard of a doctor limiting you to 2 oz. Perhaps this is for, as Betsy said, those have have difficulty drinking. They want to make sure you're getting at least 2 oz every hour. If you can drink more, not a problem.

I got my shake container from Wal-mart right over their with the Protein mix that has the number ounces listed. Usually I make it for the entire day

My surgeon requires this for Day 2 post op. Day 1 post op is 1 oz per hour. Anyway, I just plan on buying a measured container from Walmart and making enough to last all day.

If you ask the nursing staff at the hospital, I'm sure they would be willing to give you some of the graduated disposable medicine cups they use for small amounts...the 1oz size looks a lot like the dosage cups on NyQuil bottles, and then there's one that's a bit larger. I've always made up everything in full size, then park the rest in the fridge if I don't drink it all.

Hope this helps!

Christine

my doc's post op diet is this:

2oz of Protein Shake every 15 minutes which equals up to one 8oz Protein shake over one hour and they want 4 of these per day.

they also add in 64oz of other Clear Liquids throughout the day that are supposed to also be done on 2oz per 15 minute increments just like the shakes.

obviously this seems almost impossible unless you are up for 12 hours a day drinking non stop. so far i've been able to get in maybe one Protein Shake a day and one bottle of Water and maybe 4oz of juice.

i like the idea of just drinking what i can and putting the rest in the fridge til i'm ready to drink more. it sounds much easier and accommodating than carrying around these tiny plastic cups they sent me home from the hospital with. i'm constantly having to fill them up. sigh!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
