Thyroid Problems and Soy Protein

Recommended Posts

I had my thyroid removed and take levothyroxin every day. My surgeon did not seem concerned, but I was told by a couple people at work that soy Protein is an absolute No No for anyone with thyroid problems. I will be starting the 2 week liquid diet in April, before my surgery and am worried sick about it. Is there anyone out there that has thyroid problems and is it true that soy protein can alter the effectiveness of thyroid drugs? Also does anyone know of any Protein Powder that does not have soy in it? Even the whey powders I have looked at seem to also have some soy.

It's not an absolute no-no, but it's strongly recommended that soy Protein consumption be limited to 1-2 serving a day MAX---and this recommendation is not limited to those with thyroid disease. In addition to its thyroid suppressive effects, its phytoestrogens can cause problems if used in excess. (This recommendation is specific to soy Protein isolate; soy foods like edamame do not pack quite the same punch and are safer in quantity.)

This should not pose a problem for you, though; soy protein isolate is not nearly as bioavailable as whey protein isolate, which is readily, readily available (and often much less expensive). It will meet your needs better than soy protein. (I especially like the Inspire whey protein isolate from bariatriceating.com.)

You will be able to meet your protein needs without compromising your thyroid health--no problem at all!

Thank you Betsy, You did put my mind at ease. I am going to talk to my PA about this as well when I see her next week. This is all so new to me and I can't help but be concerned, in fact probably overly concerned about everything!

Yes, we're all worrywarts at the beginning--really! It gets easier.

And the good news is that, postop, you'll really have a million different sources for good-quality solid Protein, and it will become far less of an issue.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
