Hello - new here and curious

Recommended Posts

I stumbled upon this forum this morning looking for information on the Pre-Op liquid diet. I have been researching the lap band and attended a webinar. I am also type 2 diabetic (fairly controlled with just metformin). BP is a little on the high side but not horrible. (take a low dose of lisinopril - 10 mg) and have some knee pain due to thin cartilidge.

I am hoping to find some support, suggestions and also to check out my potential surgeon and look for others who may be on the board that he performed the surgery on. Also, I'm thinking that I would like to try the liquid diet out on my own to see if I can lose a good bit extra on my own and who knows, if I am successfull, I may not need to have the surgery.

Thanks for the suggestions and support. Pat

PS.......love, love, love ALL the cool little smiley creatures.:wink2:

The pre-op liquid diet is intense, and not made as a sustainable weight loss plan. It's there to help get excess weight off your organs to make the surgery safer. I also take metformin and look forward to the day when I'm told my sugar levels are no longer off, my hormones are no longer off and I can stop taking that awful medicine. I'm still in the pre-op stage, but from what I've read and seen, the surgery has helped cure a lot of ailments, which is a large reason why I have chosen to have the surgery. For someone with diabetes, it's not such a bad idea to look in to. Good luck on your decision!:wink2:

SBeth - thanks for the info. To be able to try out the liquid diet before hand would be good in my eyes. I need to be able to myself that I have the willpower to do it. I was an adopted child and always on the chubby/heavy side with the exception of a few years in my early 20's and my teens as I was pretty active when I was young and road my bike a lot and also was in marching band. My parents are very slim. My mother had me on diets to control my weight as far back as 7 or 8 yrs old that I can remember. It kinda messed me up (mentally) in some ways. Anyway, I was thinking that if I could make myself do the liquid thing for at least a week or 2 coupled with the soft diet and alternate and stick in one day a week with a nice balanced meat-veggie-small starch, that I might see enough progress to give me the willpower to keep going and get 50-60 lbs or so off by myself and then I would be able to start walking on my treadmill. (bad knees prohibit extensive walking at the moment as I don't have much cartilidge in them).

That makes sense. I have to say I understand where you're coming from. While I'm not adopted, my mom was very cruel about weight. She was overweight herself, and I guess didn't want me to be. At a very young age she constantly told me I was too fat for my age and needed to lose weight if I wanted to be normal. It caused a lot of issues for a long time. I saw a counselor for several years and was able to push past it. Now my mom is jealous I'm having the surgery. She keeps telling me it won't work for me, but I'm ignoring all of her negativity. It can make life much more difficult!!

I haven't been assigned the pre-op diet yet, otherwise I would share the details with you. I pray you get the strength to move past your mothers negativity towards you to know you can do this! Best of luck, and feel free to PM if you ever wanna chat. :-)

SBeth...thanks for the offer. I also tend to eat when I am upset or stressed out opposed to those people that don't eat at all when they are feeling stressed or depressed. My mom likes to control other things too and at 79 she is very set in her ways. That is why we live 1000 miles apart. I love them very much but sometimes I just can't handle the controlling - even at my age.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
