Normal pain post-op??

Recommended Posts

I had surgery Friday and have felt pretty good. In the evening I was starting to get some pain on the insides, in all the places I would expect with the exception of this pain i have on the lower left side of my abdomen, right inside from my hip bone is. I feel asleep for a few hours and work up and the pain in that area has increased. It feels sore and very tender, its like a dull ache which increases at times when I am walking around, or if I sit up.

I just cant imagine why the pain here is prominent when it's about 6 inches over and 3 inches down from my belly button incision. It's on the opposite side of where my port is as well - at least from what the doc told me at my consult.

Just wondering if this is normal or should concern me at all?

I don't have any gas. I do have the left shoulder pain and have burped a few times but haven't felt any bloating or gas "below" sorry for the tmi!

Congrats on your surgery!

I wouldn't worry about any pains as long as the they are tolerable. Just keep walking and drinking Water and everything will get back to normal soon.

I had a huge bruise and a little aching near the site where they injected me with the blood thinner. Could that be causing it?

Good luck and welcome to Bandland!

I also had that blood thinner injection pain, which was MUCH lower than my incisions. It was a small spot, though. But it was sore (more sore than I expected).

It also COULD be gas-- remember, the gas isn't in your stomach/bowels-- it's in your abdominal cavity. Mine moved around quite a bit in different areas of my abdomen, and felt like pressure.

If you're really concerned... definitely call your doctor's office- they probably have an answering service that will connect you to the doctor or to a nurse-- whoever is on call-- and you shouldn't feel like you're bothering them- they expect it when they are on call.

It is actually NEAR where the blood thinner shot was given...it's about two inches below the injection site. I considered that but it still just didn't seem right that's where the most prominent pain I have is coming from. I'm not overly worried (yet), I will give it some time but wanted to see if anyone else had a similar issue.

I think i am just super paranoid after I stumbled across that one thread someone posted about a recent death, the night before surgery!...it majority freaked me out and had me reading up on complications. I am freaked about blood clots! So abnormal pain is causing me a little paranoia.

Thanks for the answers!!! I really appreciate it.

OK, I have another pain question. I am now 48 hours post op. Sometimes, even before I eat or drink or after, I get this tight feeling in my THROAT. It lasts only a second and it's a tightness/shortness of breath feeling at the same time. Has anyone experienced this? I am really working on eating (liquids of course) and drinking Water slow but it's harder than I thought. Today I actually think I have hunger for the first time since coming out of surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
