I'm banded, I'm really really banded. Oh and some post-op/surgery questions...

Recommended Posts

I am officially banded as of this morning. :frown: The experience was totally OK. Immediately after waking up I had some discomfort and was really drowsy. The discomfort went away quickly with the pain meds.

The hospital would not give me anything but Water. So when I got home, I was anxious for something to relieve my sore throat and dry mouth, plus take my pain meds. I can't believe the amount of the liquid painkiller I needed to take (15-30ML). Not great tasting either! It actually left me nauseous for a few minutes. Even the Water I sipped in the car ride home made me a little nauseous. IS this normal? When will it go away? Did you take your pain meds on an empty stomach? I haven't eaten all day but now I find myself scared to eat/drink.

I'm 5 days post-op and have not taken any pain meds; even in the hospital...I don't do well with pain meds so I avoid them if I can. Actually I felt almost no pain at all with my surgery, which I thought was a bit odd... I was pretty nauseous though for about two days...It will go away..just try to SIP some Water every so often to be sure you don't get dehydrated....

Welcome to Banderland...so glad your surgery went well!

Some people have post-surgery nausea as part of an aftereffect from the anesthesia...I was told that if I had that going on, I should ask for antinausea meds, but I ended up not having to. If the nausea continues to bother you, let your surgeon know- they have meds to help you with that. If your pain meds have codeine in it, you may be reacting to that a bit as well. I only needed mine at night for 3-4 days, then gave it up.

Don't be afraid to sip Water in very small amounts, and walk around as much as you possibly can. It's going to feel odd at first, due to the swelling from the surgery, but it will all pass. Today was 2 weeks out for me, and except for some residual tiredness, I feel fine.

Hang in there!!

Christine

Congratulations!!

As a previous post said, if you are very nauseous, call your surgeon. There are good anti-nausea meds.

With the post-op diet, it is hard to not take the pain meds on an empty stomach, as you are on Clear liquids that just go right through.

Sip your fluids, don't gulp, that might help. And walk as much as you can, even just up and down the hall or laps around your living room.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
