Nervous About New Journey but Excited Too

Recommended Posts

First let me say hello to all. I look forward to this journey we have embarked on. Weight loss surgery was one of the suggestions made to me by my surgeon after being hospitalized to have a disk replaced in my neck. After surgery I was unconscience for 7 days and developed a pinched nerve problem in my leg which is aggrivated by my being overweight. I had three options: 1. live with it (not an option-too much pain) 2. have surgery to slice the nerve in half leaving me with no sensation at all (not an option for me) or 3. weight loss surgery (well I guess you already know which option I chose). After going to the seminar I chose the Lap Band. Have my first appointments with the cardiologist and pulmonologist next week and will be starting nutrition classes soon. Nervous but I hope that with every one's help the journey won't be too hard.:blushing:

Welcome. We're here to help and support you on your banded living journey. What are you most nervous about - is it the surgery itself? whether you'll fail at losing weight one more time? givining up food as comfort? Fell free to ask away...

Not so much nervous about the surgery but yes, nervous about failing at another diet. According to my husband if a diet was ever in print, I have tried it. also worried I won't be able to get through the liquid phase cause well lets face it I didn't get this big by just drinking fluids. I LOVE to eat. I have been looking at some of the ideas and although they do sound wonderful I still see some people having a lot of trouble not being really hungry. Just thinking too much I guess.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
