6 Weeks Post Op and No Fill Necessary?

Recommended Posts

Hi Friends,

So I'm a little over 6 weeks post op (banded 1.27.10) and have happily lost 26 pounds.I went to my surgeon on Tuesday and he said I didn't need a fill, which is exactly what I was thinking going into the appointment. I can eat most things, but I have to watch portion sizes. I'm still learning (and I like to push my limits) and have had some sliming and vomiting. So I have an empty band but adequate restriction for now.My next appt is in 3 mos but they told me to come in earlier if I think I need a fill. Has this happened to anyone else? Loryn

What size band do you have? I have never experienced sliming or vomiting. I think my band is expandable! LOL

I thought I was the only one out there that felt restriction without a fill. I am 1 month post op and I have lost 15lbs. no pre-op diet. I went to the dr. yesterday, but was very hesitant about getting a fill because I feel that I have some restriction. I did end up getting only 2ccs and now I feel as if I have a lot of restriciton. I don't know if this is normal or not.

No Fluid in the band, the dr. even checked. He got a needle and made sure the band was empty. Very Weird.....

I have read of others being successful at losing without getting a fill. Sometimes just the band provides enough restriction. Or perhaps its just being there serves as a reminder to you to watch your portions.

Either way, congrats! Well done on the loss.

I was banded 10/09 had good restriction without any fills for the first 3 1/2 months lost about 50 lbs. Dr suggested I might be in the small # whom never need a fill. I was hopefull too. Several days later I am in the hospital haveing my gallbladder removed everything went well but,I felt my restriction ended after the surgery. Today I went to have my first fill and there is another problem somehow my port has caused a problem with my line for fills and has to be replaced before I can get my first fill. My theory is that gallbladder surgery shifted my stuff.

I also have not had any fills and have restriction. My surgery was on 2/3/10, and I am 5 weeks out. My surgeon said he put some saline in the band during my operation, but he could not tell me how much. My last appointment was 3 days ago, and he says that since I have restriction, I really don't need a fill at the moment. I feel very fortunate not to have gone through the "bandster hell" that has been described. No sliming or PBs. A couple of times I swallowed food too fast and felt it like a "lump" in my chest, but it went away on its own after about 10-15 seconds. Since the surgery, I have lost 24lbs. I lost 20lbs before the surgery. So right know, I am loving my band. :blushing:

Wow, great weight loss! My surgery wa on 1/28 and I've only lost 14 lbs. I've had one fill and schedued to get another one next week. I think I need a little bit more restriction. I work out and watch what I eat. Maybe its just harder for some of us to lose the weight. Who knows but I feel good and my body is toning.

@ lisa, I'm not sure what size my band is, but i know it's a realize band and the dr. told me that he didn't fill it. for the longest time i thought i was feeling restriction from the swelling post surgery, but i think that i'm beyond that point but who knows. whatever it is, i'm not complaining, just curious. glad to hear there are others out there going through the same thing.

@larraine, sorry to hear about your complications, but i hope that it's all remedied soon.

@cmire, you're doing great - keep up the good work!!!

@bell1138, are you able to keep food down after your fill?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
