Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm looking at a doctor at Highland Hospital in Rochester NY. Anyone here have surgery by him and how would you rate your experience?

Thanks!

My husband and myself just attended a meeting at Rochester General Hospital where Dr. Galvin and Gusmano practice. My husband had the lap-band procedure performed on October 13th. There is a a new CEO at RGH and are right now in contract talks and the physicians are 95% sure on December 15th the bariatric center at Rochester General Hospital will be closing.

It is a very sad day. For the patients that are pre op, post op (like my husband) and also the lap banders looking for fills and only one other physician in that area will be doing them.

There needs to be some sort of change where the physicians and the hospitals start listening and caring about the people that are obese instead of looking at the all mighty $$$$.

We will be looking also for suggestions with what my husband should do. There are only 2 physicians in the Rochester area that does the lap band procedure and one will be probably leaving the Rochester area on December 15th.

I heard about Dr. Galvin leaving...what a shock! I'm so sorry! I ended up having surgery close to my home in Ithaca on 4/18. You would have thought that he knew his intentions before he even told your husband he'd do the surgery! He had to have known.

I wish you luck. If you can't find a doctor closer to your home, Ithaca isn't too far, a bit of a drive, but not 4 or 5 hours. My doctor is John Mecenas and he is wonderful. Upstate Medical in Syracuse just started doing the band....my doctor has done a lot and he studied under Dr. Christine Ren in NYC - I feel he's very competent.

Good luck, let me know how you make out!

lildarlin,

i live in rochster. i will try to give him a call soon. maybe we should get together sometime and chat since we are both in rochester. i think it would be great to connect with another bandster. i often wished i could sit and talk with someone that really and truly understands the journey and not just my hubbie (great as he is)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
