How long does it take to eat a 'regular' meal?

Recommended Posts

Okay, forgive all the questions. I guess I truly am paranoid....

I am having a much less hungry day than yesterday, but I still managed to get about 8 ounces down (took me 45 minutes, but I did it). I know they say 20-30 minutes per meal, but I was still hungry when I hit 30 minutes, so I kept going.

I know some docs say not to do this because your body starts digesting after about 20 minutes or so, but I wanted to see how long everyone else is taking to eat their meals?

First you should not be eating more than 5-6 ounces in one meal. Careful you could stretch your pouch. It generally takes me about 30 minutes to finish my meal. You should stop eating when you feel satisfied, not because your mind tells you to keep eating.

I thought you could eat 1 cup of food per meal? 1 cup is 8 oz. so were suppose to eat a little over half a cup of food instead of 1 cup? The paperwork my doctor gave me said 1 cup of food per meal.

I actually was still hungry, which is why I kept eating.

I don't know if I'm ever going to get the hang of this. I seemed to eat a lot less last week, now this week I seem to be hungrier, yet in the morning, it was all I could do to get a 6 ounce yogurt down.

I am about to just break down and do the 5-day pouch test again because that brought me restriction. I really just don't know what to do....

My doctor told me no more than 6 oz of food which is 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup. Protein supplements can be 8oz.

You got that right. Doctors are WAY different. I would suggest to everyone..follow what your doctor gave you because they do what they do for a reason. You can take the advice of others but your doctor is the one that knows best. :blushing:

I am still on mushies... so have no real guidance to give.

BUT- I question the whole use of 'ounces' as the measure... since it's a measure of weight and not volume. I mean, 8 oz of spinach is a giant bagful (several cups), whereas 8 oz of meat is a whole other thing.

I like the idea of how many CUPS of food better- as it's a measure of volume.

Sorry to get all technical..... :blushing:

I typically take between 20-30 mins to get through a solid meal. I eat between 1/4 c. and 1/2 c. at a meal. If I eat mushier food, it takes me half that time and I can eat a bit more.

How in the world are ya'll getting in all your protein/nutrients if ya'll are eating 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of food? That is not a lot of food. I don't want to drink my calories. Are ya'll drinking your calories?

During my pre op classes they told us to get a kitchen scale to weigh our food like the 3-4 oz of Protein we need to eat per meal. IMHO this is the most accurate way to measure solids - cups are for liquids.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
