Very Scared! Is this what STUCK feels like?

Recommended Posts

I'm as new to blogging as I am to being banded, so please forgive me if I'm doing this wrong. My question has to do with something being "stuck". I was doing GREAT, until the dreaded bite of steak on Sunday night. I was tired and half asleep ( I have a 7 month old baby!) and I was eating too fast and didn't really chew like I am supposed to....

Anyway, THE PAIN IN MY CHEST WAS AWFUL, BURPING, SPITTING UP MUCOUS. The steak didn't come out, but I swear I felt it pass through the band and the terrible pain in my chest stopped. Now (3 days later) my chest still feels sore, like a lump between my boobs! I have been sticking to soft foods like yogurt and tuna salad, but I feel sore when I eat. No more slime or burping, no heartburn, etc. Has anybody else had this last for days? I have fear I've "slipped" my band or done some damage.

Thanks!

Welcome!! How long ago were you banded? It might be too soon for steak. However the feelings you describe are exactly what stuck feels like. Just stay on soft solids for a few days and you should feel fine.

yes, that is EXACTLY what stuck is like - and I have to add that you were lucky to not have the steak come back up.

Stay on softer foods for several days, and just be good to yourself - give yourself some time to recover.

I have had a hard time with steak - no matter how much I chew, or how small I cut it up, steak and I no longer get along. When you are new to the band, it does take a little while to find out what foods you are good to eat, and what you need to stay away from.

Good Luck - hope you feel better soon!

Joanne

I was actually banded in November of 2008, but I found out 2 weeks later that I was expecting my first child. I decided not to use the band while pregnant (probably a mistake as I now have an extra 35 lbs of "baby weight"), so my first fill was in December of 2009. I've lost 30 lbs since then. Thanks for your reply. I was just worried about my chest being sore 3 days after the stuck episode. Good luck!

Thanks for the support and information. I had 0.3 cc put in last week to get me to the middle of the "green zone", but I think I preferred being just a little less tight. I can swallow everything, but I have that feeling of a "lump" in my throat, which is much worse after the "stuck steak" incident. I was dropping weight okay before the fill, so I might consider having my doc take a bit out at visit next week....we'll see how it goes. Good Luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
