Surprises during or after surgery??

Recommended Posts

:) What was the most surprising thing about your lap-band surgery or the "journey" you have been on??? I think all of us have had a surprise or two along the way (good or bad). Mine was having 5 incisions and the port incision being as big as it is. When I had my gallbladder removed there was only 3 tiny incisions and I assumed it would be the same for the Lap-band surgery.

I was surprised last night when I turned over and my knee bones clanked together, holy crap that hurt! That never happened before! Oh yeah, most of the extra padding on the inside of my thighs is gone...........:)

Its been a almost a month and I still can't burp. LOL.

My recovery was pretty easy breezy...I thought I was gonna feel awful but I didn't.

Surprised my incisions are healing really nicely. Yay!:)

Also, just had my first fill and that was sort of bizarre...I know it was the first one and the rest will be a little bit easier. I guess I was just freaked out, lol. I'm also surprised at the inches I'm losing as opposed to the pounds and just how gradual a process it actually is...

I was suprised at how bad the gas pain really was! When I woke up from the anesthesia my shoulders hurt more than my abdomen.

I've been banded a week and the biggest surprise by far is the lack of pain.

I was expecting "Gas" pain/pressure in chest/shoulder because I have had a lapro. surgery before - but this time it lasted 18 days! That was a surprise.

I went for my 1st fill today and my doctor could not find the port hole so I couldn't get my fill that I have been waiting for for 6 weeks. Getting depressed.

I would say the starvation that started a week post-op (I hadn't been here prior to surgery and my doc's office failed to mention it)...also, my new found amazing ability to burp loud enough and long enough to make my 5 year old son proud...

And, how quickly I felt just fine and dandy like I'd never had surgery post op.

Glad I saw this, I have been so hungry today. I am 1 week post op to the day. This is the first day it's happened. I'm going looking around for some more posts about this 1 week hunger thing!

We lovingly refer to it as "bandster hell"...from the time the swelling goes down to the time you start getting restriction...I woke up at 4 a.m. day 7 and would have eaten a cow had one been available....Just keep in mind it does get better and you can work through this! I actually was much better once I could start mushies...still hungry some but not starving. Good luck!

Huh....that must be what is happening to me. I doubled my calorie intake today from yesterday. I hope this does not affect me adversely.

I am one week post op and luckily I am not overly hungry yet :) but I will let you know tomorrow... :)

I would say my surprises were:

how quickly I am recovering. Zero pain today and honestly I was up and about day 2 with ease. secondly though was the extreme of the gas pains immediately post op. I knew enough to expect them but I didn't know it would be like that. nothing describes it well enough, words anyway. don't worry though if you're pre op, it dissipates quickly once you get moving!

also, since this was my first surgery, it is such an odd feeling drifting off with anesthesia and waking up in recovery after what feels like 1 second later...I did have some weird dreams but I went to sleep and woke right back up, in my mind anyway.

I was always surprised at how "Good" I felt eating such a small amount of food and loosing so much weight as quickly as I did! I was also surprised at how quickly you find out that there are bones under all that fat! It's been 30 years since I'd seen a collar bone or rib bone! It's so cool!!!:)

My biggest surprise was longer term. I can tell by what people post here that my eating habits were just as bad as a lot of other people's but I sure as hell would have had to binge night and day to get to 300lb.

It has turned out that I never got as fat as a lot of people on my caloric intake and I was able to lose weight on twice what some other people can and at least 400 calories more than most. I also never regain so much as an ounce now and all this without tight restriction.

I n eed my band, for sure. But it turns out, I actually seem to have a fairly fast and healthy metabolism. I got fat, yeah, but my body cut me a LOT of slack and still does in terms of eating indiscretions compared to others. I'm way luckier than I realised.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
