The Official PORK Thread

Recommended Posts

Life got a little serious on me, so I'm here for a dose of therapy. Let's talk about pork.

Why does it have to be so good? Bacon should be a free food, like celery. Anyone else feel this way?

Yes I agree! bacon should be a free food - my boyfriend always looks for the bacon with the most meat on it - why? I myself like a good mix of salty fat too - that's what makes it taste so good - you know the bite where you get a little crunch from the meat but the fat makes the piece melt in your mouth? In my best Homer Simpson voice - Mmmmmmmmmmmm bacon...

HAM - it's all about a thick slab of HAM cooked til it's all brown and sugary on the outside and pink and hammy on the inside.

Bacon has to be properly rendered to be edible...

Sausage, bacon, ham, PEPPERONI, salami, bologna, taylor ham, virginia ham sliced thin, mmmm mmmmmm I agree, it should be a free food, so should butter and sour cream.

I love a pork loin cooked tender on the grill...

They tout is as the "other" white meat so some of it IS good for you.

But NOTHING is as comforting to me as the smell of Breakfast meats in the morning!

I like hot Pork rinds when drinking beer too, but haven't had any rinds and only a couple of beers since banding.

mmmmmmmmPork rinds I love them too! We used to make our own when my parents were alive. My Mom used to make the best ever.

Pork is called "the other white meat" here because it is actually lower in fat than a lot of cuts of red meat. That is if you eat lean meat, not the crackling/rind, not bacon or other processed meat.

But you can cook a leg of pork on a rack in the oven over some Water and just remove the crackling, there's butterfly steaks and other thin, lean individual cuts of pork that are great to put on the bbq, or to grill, pan fry or casserole or stir fry.

I cant stand ham or bacon myself so dont hanker for those luckily.

Speaking of Pork rinds - no I don't eat them - but I saw the darndest thing the other day in the Wal-Mart check out line - they had individual bags like microwave popcorn bags except they were microwaved pork rinds!!! Can you believe that? That's crazy!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
