How to get enough protein in?

Recommended Posts

I am transitioning to solid foods this week, and I cannot seem to get all my Protein in. Today I've had 920 cal. and 49 grams of Protein. I have not had a fill yet, and I don't know how my protein intake is going to increase. My doctor only wants us to eat 3 meals a day with no Snacks. How in the world can you get all the protein in when you can only eat 1 cup of food at a meal, and you cannot have Snacks?

I'm going to ask my doctor when I go get my first fill next week, but thought I would ask here as well.

Cottage cheese (all cheeses) and Greek yogurt have lots of Protein. But the easiest way to add protein is to use Special K's Protein Water mix in your water. 5 calories and 5 grams of protein in each pack. I get about 20 grams of protein a day this way.

BODYCHOICE NUTRITION I get their Protein Shots. 100 calories a piece and 25 grams of protein. I have only had the sunshine orange but its ok and only 3 ounces so it goes down quick. That should fix your protein problem.

Do they have these unflavored? I noticed they don't have as many flavors as Crystal Light.

Try adding vanilla or unflavored Protein to yogurt or pudding and to water--also Protein Shots in Water.< /p>

If you go out to the Bariatric Eating website, you'll find lots of options for increasing your Protein intake. I especially recommend powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury unflavored Protein powder, at 20 grams of Protein a scoop. Tonight was my first pureed meal...I added that to the golden butternut squash Soup that's made by V-8...absolute heaven!! As long as you don't allow the mix to get too hot, and denature the protein, it works like a charm.

Good luck!

Christine

I'm too tight in the mornings to eat, so I do a double scoop of Protein powder in milk and that gives me about 50gm of Protein right there. Then I do a low carb/low cal (3, 110) Protein shake mid-morning, mid-afternoon and in the evening. It not only adds 60 more grams of protein, but keeps me from being hungry due to the additional protein, stabilizes my blood sugar and boost my calories. I know, the last seems weird, but without the shakes, my calories are only coming in at around 900-1000 and we lose faster and more steadily at 1200-1400.

By the time I add in my protein from my two meals, I'm getting about 130-140gm of protein each day.

I usually make Protein Shakes. A yummy one if you have a sweet tooth is the "reeses Peanut Butter Shake". This consists of 40 grams of Rich chocolate whey Protein Powder, 2 table spoons of Natural peanut butter, 4 oz of skim milk (or chocolate soy, but I do not drink soy) and about 1-2 cups of ice. I use the magic bullet for all my Protein shakes and works like a charm, easy to wash out vs a Vitamix blender or any other blender. But protein shakes seem to be my best bet for getting my protein in and preventing my hair from falling out. I also add a Vitamins (powder form) to my protein shakes as well.

Do you drink these as Snacks? My doctor said no Snacks (well on the sheets of paper he gave me when I first went). I will need to ask next week b/c he didn't tell me that specifically.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
