how big of bites do you take?

Recommended Posts

i got my band on Feb. 25th. my surgeon had me do one week of liquids and now im on mushies, working toward solids. how big of bites do you guys generally take? i find that if i eat pieces much larger than a large pea, no matter how well i chew, it gets stuck for a minute or two before finally going down.

that stuck sensation isnt cool at all.

I struggle with this...out of habit. I get stuck a lot but am new to all of this and learning. They say no bigger than an eraser on the tip on a pencil. I tend to take about double that. Sometimes I make it through a meal and sometimes I'm stopped dead in my tracks....stuck...and then my meal is over. As I said I'm learning and need to tell myself before I even sit down that I am banded with restriction and need to eat slowly, take small bites and chew, chew, chew. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I am getting restriction now and struggle with bite size. My biggest struggles are when we are put to eat with our toddler. I tend to woof down the food so that we can deal with her. I then tend to get stuck. I find that unless I pay close attention that I get stuck. I think that eating slow is the key.

I do try to chew well, but I do not have to take small bites...yet.

Ditto. I'm the same way. I guess it will get harder when I am at restriction.

I know you all will laugh at me, but I read somewhere that a good way to control bite size is to use baby utensils. Seems like a crazy approach, but you know, so far, it's working really well.

My challenge is that I'm not used to eating so slowly and deliberately. It's definitely something I have to do mindfully until it becomes habit.

Best, Christine

The best I could describe my eating habits are ladylike, lol.

Not abnormally tiny bites and not abnormally tiny amounts of food. I just eat slowly, small bites and small amounts. I'm usually the last finished at the table and I always leave something on the plate. But my eating habits dont attract notice or unwelcome attention.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
