Why do sweets go down so easy?

Recommended Posts

I can barely eat my 1/2 cup of regular food right now but for some reason I can eat several Cookies and feel no restriction. Obviously I try not to make this a habit as it would completely ruin all of my weightloss efforts so far but I was just wondering if anyone knew why sweet treats go down so easy?

LOL, they do slide right on down, don't they? My theory is that they are easily liquified and go right through the pouch opening.

Mimi, I thought that too, until at one point, I couldn't drink Water, yet a piece of cheesecake went down oh so smoothly!

I have trouble with this too, since there's times, I'm a lot more restricted then usual, so I resort to sweets for the day :). I would be very interested in knowing the answer to this as well...

I think though bands are meant to help us lose weight, they still have a sweet tooth too therefore gladly accept sweets when your mouth lets some pass through :(

It figures doesn't it? The things we shouldn't have go down easy. Frustrating sometimes. That just shows that nothing is perfect.

I have this same problem!! lol Doesn't help me as my one true vice is CHOCOLATE!!...and it's oh so tempting to replace meals with the bad stuff that go's down so easily....

I have been replacing my choc cravings with a glass of cold milo after dinner though which although it's not that great for you, it does satisfy my choc desire!

...so I guess the trick is exactly what you said, go for it occasionally but just don't go making replacing meals w/ the easy bad food a habit.

Not that I don't TOTALLY understand where you're coming from, because I had/have the sweet tooth from hell. But this is one path I just won't let myself go down.

If I can help it, I will NEVER know how easily sweets go down! I can't afford to have that working against me.

This is so true. I had a 3rd fill yesterday and on liquids only for 24 hours. I dutifully drank Soup but I could eat the white creamy part of the Oreo with no problem. If I really wanted to I could let the M&Ms melt in my mouth but then I have to realize I didn't pay so much $$ for this surgery to cheat like that.

I am also one of those who can eat the "slider food" and yet have trouble drinking water!!

It is a mystery to me how I have to cut one of my medications into 4 pieces in order to get it down, yet I can turn right around and eat a sweet treat!!! NOT FAIR!!:(

Another strange thing, I really have a hard time eating anything in the morning before having something hot to drink. Others have mentioned the same problem. Have any of you noticed that?

For some reason, it is easier for me to eat in the afternoon and evening. This band is a strange creature!:(

We were just talking about this the other night at support group. We all said wouldn't it be nice if the band was looser in the mornings but tighter at night, helping up to really cut back on the night time munchies.

But I too drink coffee before trying to eat anything in the morning. There are times though that I do drink Water before my coffee and don't have any problems with the Water going down.

I too think they are from the devil! An evil more tempting than the apple was to Eve. I bet that one was either a candied apple, caramel apple fudge apple, something. My best advice to any newbies. Don't even go there, not once. Just make yourself believe that if you eat sweets the PBing, slime, pain, etc. will be so severe that you will be rolling around on the floor promising to never do such a dreadful thing again.

Great idea Jetsy!

But I am such a daredevil, I'd have to try it! My first stuck episode was on .... nevermind .... I'm not telling! :(

And here I am eating my lunch at work smelling garlic fries from the cafeteria. This place is a torture chamber, I tell ya!

If only they'd turn on the exhaust fan the smells would not permeate the building. But then we would not all flock there like the sparrows back to Capistrano!

I shall resist!! :(

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
