Am I doing something wrong?

Recommended Posts

I am 19 days post surgery and I have not lost any weight. I am taking in between 600 and 800 calories per day. I really try to hit the 800 because I am feeling lots of hunger now. I believe I am making wise choices--protien shakes, since I am on mushies/soft I have had 1/2 a packet of cream of wheat for Breakfast, adding half a scoop of protien powder in it to boost the protien content. lunch is cottage cheese or a 4ounce smooth greek yogurt, for a snack I have a sf pudding cup or a motz cheese stick, dinner is usually a cup of pureed veggies with a scoop of plain or chicken flavored protien powder added to it, and maybe a few sf popsicles throughout the day as well as my Water. I am getting 64 ounces of Water in between meals.

I was losing steadily before surgery and I am feeling a bit like maybe I am doing something wrong? If you have any ideas toss them my way, please!

I'm in the same boat. I had surgery on February 15th. I was able to introduce solid foods on day 5. I am eating significantly less than I did pre-band and I am making conscious decisions on what I will be eating at each meal. I have lost about a pound since surgery. I have read so much about the Lap-Band® and have spoken with my dietician about my own weight loss. She suggested that I stay off the scale during this time to avoid becoming frustrated. You and I both know that we're not going to stay off the scale! We have to be patient and wait for our fills so we can get the proper restriction. At least this is what I tell myself everyday. Good luck on your journey! :)

Personally I do not lose on liquids or on mushies. I always am up a pound or two a couple days after my fills because of this.

You need to get 1000 to 1200 calories and you need to exercise when the doc releases you to exercise. This is a life long change that will produce results but it will be much better after you are on solid food. Once you are on solids, you should not drink your calories unless you are in a rush situation and are unable to sit down and eat. I only use Protein Shakes on fill days!! I don't like them much either, but I don't want to drink my calories any more than I absolutely have to.

Personally, I can not see why some docs recommend this 600 calorie thing. It makes no sense because if we could do this, we would not have to have a band at all.

Rapid weight loss is not a guarantee with banding any more than it is on a diet. The band just helps us when we are ready to give it all up. You will lose and you will love your band like many bandsters do. I promise!!! Hugs!!!

Give yourself time - I know it is frustrating when you feel deprived and yet get no positive outcome on the scales :-)

My weightloss slowed after surgery too - I think our bodies go into shock, still getting over surgery plus less food. On top of that little solid foods can often slow your metabolism. I found that after my first or second fill, I got a good food routine going and I suddenly started dropping pounds - of course a couple of months later it stopped again, then a bit later took off again etc. I wish I could be a steady loser but unfortunately my body doesnt work like that. So be gentle on yourself and give your body time - it will work just relax and trust it :-)

I had heard somewhere...when our bodies go through a big shock(like surgery) and/or start getting less caloric intake then normal it can sometimes shutdown.....no wieght loss...sort of a defence mech. Hope it gets better for you!! Tho I'm losing I feel it's super slow......I'm not going to worry about it till I really start a excersise routine!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
