Question about when a fill is needed

Recommended Posts

Hi:

I was banded on 1/5/10 and have had 3 small fills since then. I am not sure if I need another one or not (I have an appt. on Thursday). I do notice in the morning that it takes a little longer to drink a glass of water- although I have never had a problem drinking. I usually eat slowly and chew well- but never seem to feel full. I have never had anything stuck (don't want the experience either!) I am now at 6.2 cc. in a 10 cc. band. I know that everybody is different but am not sure what is 'normal'. I am not losing weight- but not gaining either. Just afraid of being too tight. Since I've never experienced the 'sweet spot' that everybody talks about I am afraid of missing it and then having problems with being too tight. Any body else experience this? Or have any suggestions? Thanks.

I am not even sure if I should get a fill or if I do how much they will put in or should put in...Maybe I am overthinking this?

Thanks, Sue

I think you are definately over thinking it.. LOL Go to your appt... talk to your surgeon... tell him what you are thinking, feeling, etc and that you are not sure if you need a fill or not, he will know.. but if you are not losing weight, I would say you do need at least a slight fill. And you are right, everyone is different so I don't know that there is such a thing as normal when it comes to how much it takes for us to feel restriction... After my fill in Dec, I have 3.25 CC in my 10CC band.. and I had LOTS of restriction... I lost 10 lbs between then and January, exactly 1 month later... about 5 days after I saw my surgeon in January, all of a sudden I could eat more, didn't have as many issues w/getting stuck, etc and I have only lost 3 lbs since mid January.. it's definately time for a small fill... LOL Good luck and go see your surgeon and I bet you will get at least a small fill. I understand being afraid of being too tight. But as long as you can swallow Water after your fill you should be ok.. and remember, it is not uncommon for you to get a little tighter a day or so after....

If your hungry I would say you need a fill for sure. Try not to worry about being to tight. Just explain to your doc exactly how your feeling. He/she will know what to do. All the best!

How much are you able to eat at one time? My doctor says if you can eat more than one cup at a sitting you need a fill. I was at 5cc and he filled me up to 7.5cc this time and I have alot of restriction! Can eat one cup of food rather than 2 cups I was eating. Only able to eat soft foods right now. Solids are giving me a hard time. But the weight is starting to come off again. 2 and a half pound in 4 days. Good Luck to you.

Thanks for all the advice! Will definitely keep my appointment as I am able to eat most any amount. I made stirfry chicken the other night and ate a fairly large bowl and had no problems. I could have definitely eaten more. Have definitely never felt like I had to stop at a 1/2 a cup or even a cup. Will let you know how it goes

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
