jhb 0 Posted February 28, 2010 I am so glad you asked about age. I too have been wondering about age. I turned 59 in Jan. Started the process 11/09 -still have two required doc appts then the wait for insurance approval. I can hardly think of anything else... but becoming a bandster. I read all the new threads every night- trying to get as much info as possible. So many valuable resources out there that are able to help us through this. It is a journey...good luck Any one from Michigan? :wink2:

babsy 0 Posted February 28, 2010 I am 52, and getting my band on Thursday. Can't wait, have been thinking about it on and off for years. I too have high blood pressure and cholesterol, arthritis, pain, and have decided to fix this before I get diabetes or heart disease, just know they're waiting round the corner. Plus I want to buy clothes in regular shops. You're not too old to get better health, but you're definitely too young to die from preventable health issues. I haven't had the surgery yet, but as an RN I have seen many people have this without complications, and feel very safe.:wink2: Be brave, and enjoy the rest of your life PS, there might not be many older people on the site just because not everyone is computer savvy. Mimilou2004 13 Posted February 28, 2010 (edited) I was 57 when I was banded and have no regrets. My BP is down, my joint pain is better, my cholesterol is down....all markers of the better health I was seeking. As a bonus, co-workers are teasing me about how "tiny" I am. ME-TINY!!!!!! Amazing. Because of the band I weigh less now than I did in 1970 when I joined the Army for my 20 year career!! sandi2004 2 Posted February 28, 2010 This is great! I amenjoying seeing everyone's response. In 2004 when I was banded at 55+ there were not a whole lot of us. Apparently that has changed, and change is awesome. No more meds for me, arthritis pain minimized, no physical activity restictions, shopping in the normal size department, playing with my grandkids, riding bikes, swimming, diving, fishing. Just do it! Best move I ever made and we (those 50+) should band together (pun intended) and share our new found health and all of our wow moments. My latest Wow moment was last week, on vacation in Mexico when I realized the robe in the hotel closet not only fit me, but was actually big on me! Anyone else? Froggie D 1 Posted March 1, 2010 Thanks everyone for all your stories. I am getting really pumped about it. I am not nervous about the surgery part, but nervous about whether I can make it a weight loss and weight maintenance success. I was afraid being older might make losing impossible. Also my bad eating habits and sedentary lifestyle are pretty ingrained after all these years. Now I am convinced I can do it. Thanks again! Deb
Mimilou2004 13 Posted March 1, 2010 Froggie, one of the things I didn't mention was exercise. Our metabolism's are shot so exercise is important. Start looking for a personal trainer that fits your personality....it will be money well spent. I have never had a plateau during my wt loss journey and I think it is because my personal trainer kept challenging me and changing things. Best wishes, Mimi
chubnomore 0 Posted March 2, 2010 I am the same age as you and had my surgery just a little over 2 weeks ago. It's never too late for a fresh start! I have lost 10 lbs. since 2/12 and already feel so good! I look forward to being a younger, healthier, happier version of myself. I have 2 adult children and 3 grandkids that I want to be around for! I actually wish I had done the surgery 10 years ago, but cie la vie. I say Go for it! I will be here to support you - just give me a holler. Barbara
Froggie D 1 Posted March 3, 2010 Hey Chubnomore, I just got an email from my surgeon's office and I AM APPROVED!!!!! They will be setting a date soon. It will be great to have someone who had surgery so close and so close to my same age. I am worried that I will not be successful in losing weight and keeping it off. I could use a lot of support from someone who understands! I am not sure how to do it but we could PM. Do you know how to start this? Froggie D Debra
peachwood 0 Posted March 3, 2010 (edited) GOOD FOR YOU. You will not be disappointed. I was 56 when I had the surgery in Feb 09. I feel so much better, less meds, more active and all the other things that have been said. It does take patience. But it will work. Keep us updated!! Jeri1053 0 Posted March 4, 2010 I would like to hear from people who have done this surgery in their late 50s. I am almost through the approval process and would like to know that not everyone is 30 and a lot healthier than I am. I have diabetes, hypertension, apnea, reflux, high cholesterol, joint pain, general lack of motivation and energy. I would like to know I am not alone out here. Please post! Froggie D Hi, Froggie! Boy, am I glad to see YOU here! I'm Jeri - I just joined the boards today and I will be 57 in October. I have been approved, and I'm in about the same boat that you're in. I'm fortunate to only be PRE-Diabetic, but I've got apnea, reflux, major issues with neck, back and knees and I'm also fighting the motivation, lack of energy thing! My surgery is scheduled for 3/12/10 - I'm a nervous wreck, but I'm also excited that for the first time in my life I am TRULY committed to making my weight loss efforts a success. I have been through every single weight loss program you can imagine, plus many personal attempts. None of them have worked long term or I wouldn't be here now. You CAN do this - there are lots of great people here - take advantage of the support, reach out - we're here and we'll do this TOGETHER!!! I'm going to send you a friend request!
