Hi Everyone!

Misty is a name I've made up. I've been around the boards before, but feel the need to remain annonomous for now. I've been reading and researching various procedures for 2 years roughly. It's been a difficult decision for me to make, but I'm please to have finally made it.

I'm 29, married, mother of 2 children. I'm 254 lbs. on a 5'4" frame. I have finally come to the decision that the lapband is the best option for me. I need to lose weight for health reasons but just can't bring myself to the methods of weight loss/maintaince I've used in the past (excessive exercise and starvation).

The problem is... My husband is unemployed and we are currently uninsured. So until he becomes employed I'm stuck in limbo knowing what I finally want but unable to pursue it. Any suggestions? I'm really hoping I'm one of those that get things to happen fast once I'm actually able to start. A girl can dream can't she? :D

Hi Misty,

Your in a tough situation with no insurance and your husband being unemployed. My only advice to you is to keep reading on this site and others and arm yourself with as much information as possible. When the time comes and your able to move forward in the process you will be ready. Have you chosen a Doc? Most dont charge for the informational sessions they offer....I would attend a few of those now, decide on the Doc you want then learn everything you need to know about what that Doc requires pre-op. Then when the time comes, you'll be ready to go and there wont be anything to hold you back. Good luck to you.....

Jimmy, I sure hope you just forgot to use a smiley and didn't mean that comment the way it sounded!

Misty, that is indeed a tough situation, but I definitely don't recommend divorce as a solution. :D I hope your husband (or you?) can find something with benefits soon.

Reading about other people's band journeys is particularly hard when one seems to be up against a dead end. But circumstances can change quickly, and here's hoping that they do for you!!

I would sign up with a couple of doctors, since it takes almost a year before you get any real action, you may have insurance by then....you can always delay if not. I didnt get charged for any pre-surgery workshops either.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
