Ok I was banded on the 23rd this month, I have been having extremely bad dry mouth. Is that normal and what should I do?!?

The anesthesia, the pain meds, and having my mouth open so long during surgery did this to me too.

I don't know if it is the same with yours without looking in your mouth. I was so bad that Water or anything else would not help.

It took away all my saliva to the point where a few days after surgery a layer of my oral mucosa pealed off including the papilla (hair like taste buds) on the top of my tongue. That was actually a good thing. After getting rid of the tissue that had been dried out too long, things quickly went back to normal.

Try a very mild cough drop. I used rootbeer flavored one from walgreens.

One thing to keep in mind is to not use Listerine while you have this dry mouth because it is very high in alcohol and will only dry you out more.

I also had EXTREMELY dry mouth and still do. I also had a REALLY bad "medicine/chemical" taste in my mouth that would not go away. I asked my doctor if it was normal and he said "the dry mouth-yes, the taste in your mouth-no." I asked him what I should do and he said "keep sipping fluids and just monitor the bad taste in your mouth" whatever that means??? he didn't seem too worried about it-so I'm not going to worry myself. I am 8 days post-op and my dry mouth is getting better, not gone yet, but better. It seemed to start getting better when I started eating soft foods.

Hopefully this is not a long term thing for you. It just happened after surgery right ?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
