shadst8 8 Posted February 25, 2010 I went for my first fill--very glad it was here as you know how hard it is before the first fill--I have been summoning willpower from the heavens and have stuck to everything--no cheating. Although I knew I might achieve restriction this time around, at least I would be one fill closer. Well, I get there. My doctor uses an ultrasound to mark where the port is. He marks, numbs me and I am thinking so far so good. Well, the port was so deep and awkward to get to, he could not do the fill!:smile2: He poke and prodded and numbed me three times, but nothing but pain. I now have to go back in three weeks (would have been four weeks for a 2nd fill, so he moved it to three--geesh, thanks). He hopes with more weight loss it will pop up better or he will do it florouscopicly (sp?)I am so bummed out.

juliansmom2003 3 Posted February 26, 2010 I'm so sorry you couldn't get your fill today. I can't imagine how disappointed you must be. Wishing you lots of luck on the next try and hoping the time flies by so you can get some restriction....
mkmelissag 0 Posted February 26, 2010 I know what a bummer that is. The same thing happened to me. My doc only made me wait one week to come back though. He ended up doing it under in flouro, which was breeze. Actually, it was pretty cool to see the band, and watch the barium flow through. It turns out my port is a bit "twisted". I had to lay on my side and he went in at an angle. He said was just poking at the back side of it before, and there was no way he could have done it without the flouro. He also said, like your doc, that there is a good chance that as I lose weight it will correct itself. I've got a pretty thick "spare tire." I hope that's where I lose it first! LOL. Our stats are similar. My highest was 374, surgery 12/24 at 360, last week was 340. Good luck on your next appt and keep us posted! Sending good vibes your way. ElfiePoo 109 Posted February 26, 2010 Well color me assertive...if that was me (and I recognize we all handle things differently) I'd call them back up and tell them that, on reflection, this just is not acceptable. Sorry, but this sounds like incompetence from either the surgeon who put it in, or the person trying to do the fill (same person?). If the port was installed correctly, meaning not upside down, there should not be an issue with accessing it. .

My doctor routinely uses fluoro, but if he didn't and was unable to access my port, I would say, "I'm here now. How about instead of waiting several weeks to do it under fluoro, we do it before I leave this office today?" (And if he didn't have it in his office? I'd volunteer to walk with him to radiology.) Trust me I am very pushy--my surgeon was the one giving the fill--Thursdays is his surgery day because he does all his surgeries in a hospital in another town--they squeezed my fill-in between his surgery because obviously I was not trying to wait pass my six weeks. Until you experience the pain of that when your port is is awkwardly turned and deep , you would understand why at that moment I wanted to leave and not capable of walking to any radiology--it hurt more than the surgery pain-I slept on the couch. By that time, he used some term like it is starting to adeema? My guess is swelling around it--my stomach is so swollen to day on that side Edited February 26, 2010 by shadst8 typo and addition
shadst8 8 Posted February 26, 2010 Oh--far as three weeks--I have called this morning before they even opened and left a message--waiting to hear back from them!!!
mkmelissag 0 Posted March 26, 2010 Have you been able to get in for your fill yet? How are you doing? I just had my 2nd fill - flouro required again. Doc still saying after I lose 20-30 lbs, he may be able to access it better. But, he also said that if after 4 fills it is still difficult, he'll consider port revision surgery. I hope yours goes much better! :tt1:

I was able to get a appointment the following week, but I had to change back to this Monday because I had to go out of town twice--I did not want to be out of town if I had problems. He was able to access without flouro Monday after a lot pressing and feeling. He says the more weight I loose it will shift. He was proud because I had loss enough that he could feel it just fine, but it is awkwardly pointed and hard to see on the ultrasound (he uses ultrasound to locate and then marks it with a pen). Still was kind of sore from all the pressure applied, but nothing like last time and I got my fill!:tt1: Thanks for asking
