Fill/Restriction?

Recommended Posts

At this point, I think I am either not in tune with my body or I have no concept of what restriction is.

I went in this morning for my second fill, I went to radiology and the doc took a look at my current restriction level (does fills under fluroscopy) and looked confused. He said, "you have restriction-are you not feeling full? Are you able to eat more than you should be?". I explained that I could eat 8 ounces, but I could keep going. I just stop myself. He said he could argue either way, but he'd put some in and we'd take another look. He put some in, stood me up and I swallowed more barium and he said, "This looks good. It's not refluxing up and goes down just as it should.". I asked him how much he gave me and said .8 ccs. He didn't have my chart, so I'll find out how many he put in for the first fill on Tuesday when I go into his office.

So I can physically see on that screen that I am restricted. I know I'm tighter in the mornings, but the doc said if he gave me much more that I would be throwing up in the mornings and not able to eat.

Could my ability to eat larger portions really be all in my head, just head hunger? Has it taken anyone else longer to grasp these concepts?

The other thing to consider is it is not how much you can eat but how much you need to eat.It is not a challenge!

Fullness is different post banding to pre banding. You need to learn to stop when you feel satisfied not keep going until you feel full/stuffed or till your band actually stops you.

You need to recognise the subtle signals that you have had enough.

Most Dr's recommend that you try leaving a little food on your plate. This can be hard to do when we have always been taught that we need to finish everything.

I don't think its head hunger because when I am through eating, if I take one more bite I am in pain. It is not physically possible for me to eat another bite or I start slimming and throwing up.

Maybe because of your anatomy your pouch is a little bigger than others? I would ask the Dr if that is possible.

When you say you can eat 8 oz's. Like a 1/2 cup (size) or like 8 oz of steak (weight)?

Like weight. I could eat a whole Lean Cuisine and still be hungry :-( I don't ever "pay" for overeating-- only when I eat too fast or don't chew thoroughly.

I have my 4 month post op appt on Tuesday. I really need to find out if I'm just one of the lucky ones or why I don't get that terrible pain when I have one bite too many. It is not making any sense to me :-(

Let me know what you find out. I would like to know. But I also want to say congrats on the 52! In 4 months thats great. I am happy for you, I am especially impressed that your doing it while you are still feeling hungry, that means you are mostly doing it on will power. Good job. I hope it gets easier for you.

Thanks Leigha. I have to be honest though--17 was actually pre-op (started program in Aug)--35 post op, but I'll take it LOL

I will definitely let you know what the doc says after my appt on Tuesday.

Thanks again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
