should I or shouldn't I

Recommended Posts

I am 5'4" short and weigh 200 lbs. I am debating on getting the lapband to help me get to my pre-twin pregnancy weight of 150. I would like to hear if anyone thinks that I should or shouldn't do it. I have just started researching it and I still do not know a whole lot about it. My neighbor gave me the name of her doctor and I am thinking about going for a consult. Just wondering if the risks outweigh the results.

I wouldn't undergo surgery to lose only 50 pounds but it is a personal decision.

Also, you'll be paying for it out of pocket because no insurance company will pay with your low BMI.

What else have you tried?

Having this kind of surgery is definitely something you should not do lightly. It requires a commitment to drastic life changes that you'll be subject to forever. For many, if not most, of us, our weight problems have been something that we've been battling most of our lives.

I would do a LOT of research...and see if you can find a Lap Band seminar in your area...check the phone book under Bariatric Physicians, perhaps. Attending such a seminar may also give you the opportunity to talk to others who have been banded.

If you need a program that's more structured, I'd also check with your local hospital to see if they have a bariatric outpatient program available to you.

Best wishes on your journey-

Christine

Your BMI is 34.3.

I had a BMI of 32 and I did it. Many people may not think its worth it to only lose 50lb but chances are that if you don't do something now that 50lb will turn into 100lb or more. With a BMI of 34.3 you are obese. This should be good enough and here in Australia it is. Our insurers do not require us to be morbidly or super obese to get the surgery. I think that is sensible as it is better to address the situation sooner rather than later.

I wish I could have had this surgery years ago as I feel fabulous. I had tried every diet under the sun and then some. Some I lost weight, some I didn't - needless to say I always gained it back.

Sadly it seems US insurers won't pay with your BMI though so for you it is still an expensive option. You will have to weigh for yourself if it is an option.

Personally I believe that the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
