Insurance worries me

Recommended Posts

So, I am 29 years old, at 250lbs now with a height of 5ft 8in. My weight has been an issue since 2000. My BMI has yet to reach 40, but it has been over 35 since 2000. I am slowly getting more tired, back pains, ankles pains. MY blood pressure and cholesterol, thankfully, have always been good. My family on both sides have a strong history of heart disease, and high blood pressure. I have GREAT insurance with UHC Choice thru Boys Town. I have worked here for nearly 5 yrs, and have had to pay the most of $250 ever for anything. I go for the seminar on MArch 11th. I am trying to be optomistic about getting approved, but I fear I will not. I am a person who never goes to the doctor because I hate it. So, I have minimal dr records. I am hoping someone will have a story similiar to mine, and be able to tell me that I will get approved! Weight loss never works for me, in fact I have been working out 3 days a week since June and have gained 18lbs. Weight is taking over my life, and isolating me from the world. Please, someone give me hope that the lap band will work for me, and that I will get approved!:)

Insurance worries me too. I started by contacting my insurance company and asking if WLS is covered. They said yes if medically nesassary. My bmi is 37 so I have to meet certain requirements and have a co-morbity. Such as HBP, diabeties , sleep apnea. You should start by contacting UHC and ask if WLS is covered under your policy and what the requirements are. All policies differ. Most insurance companies require a co-morbity such as HBP, diabeties, sleep apnea. You should get tested for sleep apnea. Good luck on your journey, dont get discourged, only you can take over your life. Your weight is just an obstacle that you will overcome.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
