First Fill Experience

Recommended Posts

I was banded on January 8th. I weighed in at 260lbs. I chose this route even though I had lost in the past because I was tired of the gaining/losing vicious cycle, the diabetes, high cholesterol and PCOS (which has caused difficulty in conceiving). I am happily married and want the opportunity to have children and be healthy for them.

I don't regret my decision though this has been hard. I have healed quick and have had no problems. I have a great surgeon that you wait forever for for less than five minutes.

I went yesterday for the first fill and was nervous as heck. People had scared me of really big needles and such. It was so easy and barely felt a thing. He pushed it in and took out so quickly, I really was shocked it was so quick and painless, maybe like a shot.

I have a Realize band that he said holds 11cc. He only gives 1 cc the first fill and then every four weeks he gives more than that until you are restricted which he predicts three or four. I have lost 25 lbs. I was disappointed because I was hungry as a cow and I am forcing myself to eat smaller, healthier and busting a serious sweat at the YMCA on the elliptical and such. I knew that 25 was on my own doing.

I asked him if it was enough...then he said, when have you been able to lose that much in 6 weeks, you should be proud of yourself, and you won't regret the lifestyle changes in your diet and exercise because once we get you to the proper restriction, all your hard work will pay off.

Let's hope he' right and I will be able to see the difference by Spring and Summer.

Side note: At least my underwear fit better:biggrin:

I have realize band as well. 5.5 first fill and another 2.7 over the course of the next 3. I am close but not quite there yet. Though I don't have total restriction I eat much less. I get them done under flouro so he can be much more agressive. Good luck.

Greg

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
