Need Lap Band Buddy / Mentor Could use regular encouragement

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am 57, 5'2", weigh 187 and have been banded since last April (09). I am fighting this more than I ever thought I would. I am having a tough time giving up my love affair with food and could use someone who is kind, checks in once in awhile. I will be calling (again) to arrange for an appointment with a psychotherapist to help with the roots of the over/constant need to eat. I find myself breaking the "rules" and I cannot seem to discipline myself---same problems that got me into this overweight predicament to begin with. I am generally not a "needy" type person, but I am a little upset with myself.

Thank you for your time.

I'm glad you are making an appointment with a therapist. That's a great step to take, and certainly tells me that you are serious about getting a hnadle on this weight issue. You are not "needy" just because you're asking for support. This weight thing is something most of us have been fighting with all of our lives, and if we could do it by ourselves we certainly would have by now! You are SMART for reaching out for help. I'd be more than happy to offer any support and encouragement that I could. I know how hard this journey is- I made it, and almost 6 years later I am still on it. It is a struggle every day. Just because I hit a somewhat normal weight does't mean I don't have to think about what I eat, how often I exercise and make important choices about this daily. And, sometimes, I don't make the best choice for me. However, what I have learned to do, is not give up, but rather say something ot myself like" what's done is done- your next choice will be better" and then plan carefully for the next meals. If it's really difficult to be making those good choices I start back at square one- eating dense Protein, and vegetables and writing down everything I eat and drink. Boy, that really helps me be accountable to myself. And then, I reach out to my buddy/mentor and am accountable to her as well as myself. all this helps me. If you would like to try and write down everything you eat and email it to me daily for a week and see if that helps you "kick start" a rebooting effort I'll be glad to receieve your emails. Another thing, while you're writing down everythin, include your feelings. That sometimes helps you pinpoint what is going on whenyou look back at it.

You may find some useful information on my blog, or on my buddy/mentor's blog...If you like, take a look at:

Hi Judy, I think we have all been in the same boat that you are in at one point of our lapband. just try to take one day at a time, write down everything you eat and than go back and see what changes you can make.

Judy,

We are glad your here. I personally got the band because I have Portion Control issues. Once I started eating I couldn't stop until I had 2 plates of food. I was always hungry. If you don't mind me asking, what type of eater are you? (Such as too much at one time, a little bit at a time but too many times a day, all carbs, too much sugar, etc?) What about fills? How has your follow up care been? I believe in head hunger but I also believe in body hunger too. There are a lot of people on this site going through the same feelings....

Sounds like that's why we are all here and if we count on each other and reach out to each other we will all be successful on our journey of Banded Living..I am currently on vacation, and even over 5 years after being banded I still have Wow moments- I can just open the closet at a hotel and put on the robe that's been left inside and IT FITS! Find silly little things that are in fact huge achievements and encourage yourself with them. Email, call, write, just stay in touch with supportive people and it will help. go to support group if there is one you can get to. I still attend, and I still elarn things. I figure it took me 56 years to get to 424 pounds, 28 months to get down to 175 and now the rest of my life to stay there!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
