Newly banded - how do you gain weight after lapband?

Recommended Posts

I was banded 2 weeks ago today - and as I'm reading these forums, I'm starting to get a tad worried. I see some posts where people aren't losing weight or have gained weight back. How and why does this happen? Thanks - I'd just hate to think that I had surgery for nothing!

If you eat high calorie foods and dont exercise You can gain. Things like milkshakes and ice cream go down easy. We have to do our part the band only limits our food intake the rest is up to us.:frown: we are all human and can sometimes slip up.

I love my band!

I gained weight between my surgery and my first fill. I thought I had wasted my $10k (self pay). But since then I started getting fills and I have been losing an average 2 lbs per week. Don't worry right now. You should be healing your body. Once you are eating regular foods and start getting fills then you will have restriction and start losing (as long as you are eating the right things).

After surgery you are swollen, Fluid retention and all that good stuff and that can cause you to gain weight. I wouldn't worry about weight loss until after you are healed. The weight will start to come off, it just takes some a little longer than others.

I also have gained 4lbs since my surgery on FEb. 11th. I was shocked and disappointed. My doctor said it's b/c our bodies have gone into starvation mode and are clinging to every last drop of liquid we are putting in our bodies. As soon as I am permitted to eat some foods high in Protein she said the weight will start to come off.

the most dangerous moment to gain weight i think is between starting to eat solids and the first fill. i was banded 1.15 and i have lost 25lbs. i havent gained back anything but i havent lost anything since i am eating more now, than right after the surgery, so i am glad i havent gained, i mean i did gain a lb, but i list it right away, so just keep on top of ur weight, try not gain anything, but if u dont lose any, its ok, wait for ur first fill... mine is 3.08... so its pretty soon and i cant wait because i want to start loosing again, but i am happy right now not gaining back what i lost already!

The band is a tool we have to use. If you buy a hammer and leave it in the package, you won't get many nails into the wood. We have to get our fills, eat proper band foods, drink lots of Water, and educate ourselves the best we can. We also need to make sure we really want to lose weight. This seems like a no-brainer, but from the hundreds of posts I have read, I really believe some are not really ready to lose weight. I know a woman who got a gastric bypass 25 years ago. She lost all of her weight, and hated it. She said she scared herself every time she looked in the mirror. She gained back a lot, she is still down 100lbs but she was not comfortable thin. food for thought~~~~~

The after care is key - you will not lose weight or gain it if you are not on top of getting to proper restriction as quickly as possible. Every practice is different but for me it took 3 fills and since then I lose about 8 lbs a month.

I was dissapointed about gaining weight when I returned from the hospital. I stayed overnight because of my co-morbidities. I gained 4 pounds and hadn't eaten anything but small amounts of Jello and the protien shakes. I was also scared this wasn't going to work for me. A week after my surgery I did my post op visit, and I was 20 lbs from the pre op visit. I think my weight gain came from the IVs they gave me while in the hospital.

I'm now waiting for my first fill. The Drs office said anything I loose between now and the first fill is bonus. I've come down a few pounds since then, but not what I would like. I'm just trying to be patient.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
