New to site, had lap band put in 2/15/10

Recommended Posts

Hello, My name is Robin and I live in Cincinnati, OH. Dr. Trace Curry performed my lap band surgery on 2/15/10 I also had a hiatal hernia repaired. I think the recovery from the hernia repair is more difficult than the actual lap band, anyone else think that that went thru what I did ? The breathing in heavy hurts so bad and coughing is a killer. Starting to wear off now some, but now most of my pain is now to the right of my belly button maybe up a little bit, feels like a pulling sensation whener I walk and move my right leg when I walk it pulls. I seem to be doing pretty good on my pureed diet with getting in my Protein and the right amount of fat & carbs seems to be going pretty well. I am now 6 days out and have lost 9.5 lbs is that normal to lose that much the 1st week ? Thanks for reading and good luck everyone....Robin

I think my hernia repair was more painful than the band. It hurt everytime I would take a breath. I think it lasted about 10 days for me. It did get better each day though. I think 9 lbs is ok for the first week. I wouldn't worry about it. The pulling pain maybe your port. Just give it all some time. it is just a little fragment compared to the rest of your life.

Hi Robin,

My name is Tina. I was banded by Dr. C the same day you were. I was his 9:30 appointment. I had terrible shoulder pain from the gas. No hernia, I have always heard that hernia surgeries are tough to get over. I hope you have a quick healing period. I will never forget the weather that day. I live a little over an hour north of columbus. Because of road conditions and accidents it took us 7 hours to travel from the surgery center to just south of Columbus. We ended up staying all night at a hotel in Columbus. We got up the next morning and drove straight home in an hour and a half no problems. I have done well this week except for gas pain (thought I was going to lose my mind ), I am down 6 pounds I lost 17 pounds pre-op. I had plans on going back to work this morning but we have real icy rain here, I think I will wait (really understanding boss) so I am just resting more today. Good luck!!! PS Do you have a lot to lose?Tina

I was banded Dec 3rd. I didn't have a hernia though. Sounds to me like you are doing great with the weight loss. The pain should much improve over the next wk or so. Very important to get in the fluids right after surgery. I got dehydrated and had to get IV fluids. Good Luck!

I had my surgery Feb 18, 2010 and had a hiatal hernia repaired too. I felt like I was dying the first 2 days or so. I was almost back to normal though by day 6. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
