Question about Post Op Followup from your Dr.

Recommended Posts

My Dr.'s office already had me set up for all appointments ahead of the surgery date. My post op visit is two weeks after my surgery date.

I was banded 10/5/09 and have not seen surgeon since the day of 1 week follow up. I saw the associate as a follow up in hospital and have seen the PA each month since then and for my fills. I was surprised but realized this seems normal. He is very nice and would see me if needed, just has the PA handle day to day stuff.

The PA is nice and the nutritionist is a little dipsy, but I really like my surgeon's practice.

I thought my experience was normal:

I had a pre-op visit on a Monday in which I got a post-op appointment, pain Rx and discharge instructions. My surgery was that Wednesday. I saw my Dr. (Cynthia Long) 10 minutes before I went under, and about 2 hours after I woke up, then 15 minutes after that following my X-Ray. I stayed overnight, so saw her the following day when she came to my hospital room to check on me.

Considering the above posts, and the fact that all of this happened between and during one of the 2 Blizzards we had in this area that week, I'd say my doctor ROCKS!

The only time I seen my surgeon after the surgery was when I passed him in the hallway on one of my short walks. The nurses and aides were the greatest so I don't feel like I wasn't taken care of.

On the otherhand our dentist calls and checks up on us after every procedure. He is a great guy!

I had my surgery with Dr. Kim on Thursday the 19th. I have not seen or heard from him since my surgery. I did hear from the hospital. They called to see how I was doing and about the care I recieved while I was under their care. I recieved the date of my post-op visit the same day I recieved my surgery date. I think it's pretty normal not to hear from them. My opinion if we have any problems, they will get call from us. To them I think no news is good news. I agree it would be nice to get call to see how we are doing!

All is well with me no pain, soreness comes and goes. I have done a lot of walking and will return to work on Monday. All gas pain is gone. Bad part I am getting an appetitie back:sad:. Sticking to only protien shakes, Water, and SF Jello.

I met my Dr/surgeon on November 23rd... Saw him again on November 28th when he did the pre op thing (The camera down the throat to look in my tummy thing...)... Then He talked to me before and after my Surgery on december 4th and called me on the evening of the 5th to see how I was feeling... I had my first follow up visit with him on Dec 7th and he does all the fills and follow ups himself so I have seen him 3 or 4 more times since the actual Surgery... He is very quick and efficient... And his staff is very good at taking my calls and answering my questions if I ever call the office... My last visit, I didn't think I needed a fill yet so he said okay, just give my office a call when you feel like you need one and so I called on Friday and have an appointment coming up on Tuesday...

I had my surgery on a Friday. Surgeon's Nurse Practitioner called Saturday morning to check on me. Surgeon called Monday morning to check on me. Then I saw him at one week post-op. He does all my fills.

Dr Kim did my surgery too, I had a horrible case of gas but didn't know what I could take the night after surgery so I called his office about 10PM and he personally called me back within 5 minutes. That was back in October and I haven't talked to him since, but I haven't needed to. I feel like if I need them they are just a phone call away. I get my fills at Forest Park (I love those people) and I have called them a couple of times with questions.

Were you discharged the same day? If so, I think your experience is typical. You have discharge instructions, and will follow up soon with an office visit.

If you stayed overnight, I would have expected a visit from the doctor or his PA prior to discharge---since he'd have to visit the unit to write discharge orders, anyway.

Bariatric surgeons form longer-lasting relationships with their patients than many surgeons, so they do tend to be a warmer bunch, IMO. But it doesn't sound as though your experience was atypical

(It's also really normal to feel a little abandoned after surgery--there is such a buildup of anticipation, and then it's a bit anticlimactic.)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
