Am I hooked on "fills"?

Recommended Posts

The last time I got a fill ... December, I think, I thought I was at my "sweet spot". But of late I feel that I can eat more at lunch, not to mention dinner. At lunch it is easier to only eat what I brought for lunch but when I am home for dinner and famished -- try as I might, I often eat more than I should.

I hear many people say that they can only eat a cup of food; and while I may keep my food down to a cup it is usually because I am trying to stick to my food plan.

In your opinion(s), do I need a fill? Should I be so full after eating a cup of food that I can't bear another bite or, is it that I should just stop at a cup and give my stomach a chance to feel full?

The PA I see most often at my sugeon's office has explained to me that as one loses weight the "tightness" of the band can change. The sweet spot is not a stationary thing. That being said, I think it varies from person to person as to how tight is too tight and how tight is just right. For me, I am at 6 cc in a 10 cc band (had a fill of 0.5cc a week ago today) and there is no way in heck I could consume a whole cup of food at one sitting right now.

If I were you I'd call and discuss with your surgeon/pa/nurse how much you can eat and how long you feel full after eating. These are the questions they always ask me when we are trying to decide on whether a fill is appropriate.

Good luck!

I'd say you probably could use a fill. I know that we shouldn't be getting hungry before four hours or so if we're at the sweet spot, or green zone, especially if you are making wise food choices and getting your Protein in.

When I told my doc that I COULD eat more than a cup of food, his response was, "I still want you to diet." From what I have read in literature and on this site, you should stop eating when you are satisfied and that should be after a cup of food....Easier said than done...If I could have stopped when I was satisfied before I probably wouldn't be obese right?!

@arthukd: LOLLLLL, I wouldn't be obese either ... LOL

I think I will give my doc office a call, see what he thinks. While I may not think that I have lost enough weight to have changed my band fill -- what do I know ... I'll check with the doc.

Thanks everyone.

I agree with the PP stating that you may have lost weight and some of that weight was around your stomach. Over time the band can loosen this way. Call and get that fill....

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
