exercise after surgery

Recommended Posts

for those of you who had tummy and breast done at the same time....

when did your surgeon say you could start exercising (even just stretching, walking, light weights, etc) when did you FEEL like exercising, and when did you really get back into it?

Thanks!

Hi, The Surgeon's that I work for usually suggest that you could start walking as soon as you are up to it. (week or so) It is usually about 4 weeks for any heavy lifting, and about 6 weeks until you are released to full exercize. I had breast lift/implants/tummy tuck and Lipo on the same day, went back to work in 2 weeks.

I just wanted to comment and make sure you are weight stable for at least 6 months before you have surgery. it's really important. Once the weight is off everything takes a while to redistribute itself. You will not be doing yourself a favor if you short circuit that process. I had a LBL and then did breasts and arms later and after the LBL it was 6 weeks before I wanted to start light treadmill again and about 8 weeks before I was in the Water swimming laps.

It was a little quicker with the arms and breasts - I was walking after 2 weeks locally and on the treadmill by 3 weeks. Swimming was 6 weeks and boy was it weird....But I am full steam ahead now...

As far as when I wanted to exercise, by 2 weeks after both sets of procedures I wanted to exercise because I hate sitting still, but I followed the doc's instructions..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
