Numbess in Upper Thighs Since Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello all fellow bandsters. I was banded last Wednesday (hooray!) but I have had major numbness in my upper thighs since immediately after the surgery. It started with my left and then worked its way over to my right. My left cleared up after a few days but my right is still going strong. It feel like I have frostbite. It is sensitive to the touch and painful at times. It is worst when I am lying on my back. My doc thinks they might have strapped me too tightly on the table and bruised my hips. Does anyone have any other ideas?? Thanks for your help!! Kate

Kate it happens to me sometimes too. I've had my band in since June '08. I don't know what causes it but does it ever go away or is it always numb? It cold be a sign of diabetes. Something to check out. Good luck.

Thanks so much for your reply. I had never had surgery before and we have pretty much figured out (at least I hope) that when they blew me up with gas, it pinched my sciatic nerve. I have had about 50% recovery in my right leg, but it is still numb. I feel pressure but nothing tactile on the surface, almost like having novacaine in your mouth. It seems to be getting better a little everyday. Thanks for the tip on diabetes though...luckily I have always tested fine for that. However, diabetes was one of my reasons for having this surgery since both my parents are diabetic. Thanks again for your reply. I do appreciate it!! ~Kate

Just curious, is it your whole thigh or just parts of it? I've had problems with numbness in my upper right thigh for years. Always worse when i've been on my feet for awhile. When i've been on my feet, it feels like something that was asleep is waking up, the paiful tingling, but even with the tingling, i can't feel anything that touches my leg in that spot. It's annoying.

Hiya! My problem started with my left thigh immediately following surgery. The entire top half was totally numb with tingly almost firework type electrical charges?? (I know it's crazy but it's the only way I can explain it) I started moving over to my right leg the following day. My left outer thigh started getting better almost right away...then was almost totally normal after about the week. The right leg was a lot worse. The tingly sensation was more like painful lightening bolts and would wake me up at night. A lot of that leg has now healed. I haven't had lightening bolts for about a week now but the top right side from hip to knee is still a little numb. I am started to feel my nails a litter more each day if I try to scratch it. It's progress! Thanks for your reply!

They pretty much determined it was a pinched sciatic nerve. I am definitely not a doctor, but it seems possible. Ibuprofen helps quite a bit as it is an anti-inflammatory. Good luck!

I've thought in the past that it could be a pinched nerve, but I never got it checked out. When it started happening, i had no insurance, and then when i had insurance, i had bigger things to worry about. I have found that as i lose weight, it gets better. :wink2:

Make sure you take care of you too! Especially if it is something that would make you feel better! I will admit that this whole pinched nerve thing is really a nuisance. ~kate

At my pre surgery class the Nurse Practioner mentioned that larger people don't get the same amount of support from the operating table as thin people. This can lead to nerves getting pinched because there is a lot of weight pressing on them. So some people wake up to numbness in the arms or legs.

I have not noticed this in my hips or upper thighs but in my feet you bet I did and I still ahve the problem and I am four years post op. They were fine the day I went in for surgery and the following day when putting on my socks, my right legs above the ankle bone felt numb and tingily, radiationg to my last two toes. I complained of this but was told that the foot pumps they put on me might have compressed a nerve, well four years later and both feet are affected by this. I have asked my Surgeon, my veins surgeon, my own Dr. and well no one listens to me. My toes feel like skeleton toes, all bent and curling in. I have feeling but numbness and tingling all at the same time. I was a Type 2 diabetic but no nerve damage due to the disease. My current AI C level is at a 5 no signs of diabetes, so nuropathy should be ruled out but I do have lowere back problems and my back will go out for weeks at a time so that could be the problem so now I need a nerve test and those are painful, probes going into your nerves ouch.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
