Scary reaction to Scopolamine

Recommended Posts

I was banded this past Monday. Before surgery the nurse put a Scopolamine patch behind my ear to help with nausea. She told me to avoid touching because if you do and then you touch your eyes it will cause them to dilate. I woke from surgery and was shown a pretty cool picture of my band around my stomach. I could see it fine. I got home and took about a 2 hour nap. When I got up, I went into the kitchen to get Water and I noticed that I wasn't able to see the numbers on the microwave. So I picked up a piece of paper and I could NOT see the words on the page. Before surgery I could see perfectly. I was terrified that I was one of the very rare cases and I was going blind. I had my surgeon paged the next morning and when he called back he said that he'd heard it before and that it was most likely the patch. He thought that it would get better by that night. He was right and I started to see improvement. Thank God! I don't recall touching it but I suppose it could've happened during recovery. All I do know is that it was very scary. Just thought I'd tell every one of my experience in case the same thing happens to you. Hopefully you won't panic like I did. Good luck to all of you!

OMG! I did not get that warning when they put that on me and the day after surgery I noticed that I was having a hard time reading because everything was blurry. Then when I got home the next day it was the same thing. When I tried to write something it looked as though I was writting with electric ink! I thought it was the pain meds. It wore off after a day or so home. I took the patch off on day three. I bet that was it because it is two weeks later and I have never had that reaction since taking the pain med again.!

That is so weird!:(

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
