Abdominoplasty @ 300lbs

Recommended Posts

I went to a my doctor today for a routine fill and he began feelin around my hips and upper thighs. He said, "I can feel your bone". He said that he thinks I'm ready for abdominoplasty. I was like (because I couldn't beleive what I was hearing) "how much more weight do you think I need to lose?". He said, I think you're ready now. At the most maybe another 20 lbs, but I really think you're ready now. I was shocked. I was banded a year ago (2/13/09) and have only lost just over 65lbs (I was hoping to have lost closer to 100). Does this sound right? A abdominoplasty at 300 lbs? Really? Has anyone ever heard of this? I would think it would look weird. I have another 100+ lbs to lose - would I need another then? My mother who is a nurse said she once observed an abdominoplasty of someone who was far hevier than I where they removed 60+ lbs of skin and fat from her stomach. The prospect is exciting but 'm confused. I thought I would need to be near or at my goal weight. Please let me know what you all think.

Obviously the Dr knows you better physically but I have had a plastic surgeon tell me for best results wait until your finished. I would think if you lost another 100 you would have to do it again or it would be loose. And of course, because I am a cynic, my first thought is he is trying to get paid twice. :( May not be the case, but my motto is never ask the car salesman which car to buy. Ask someone who has no financial gain in their answer.

Hi:

I think if you have abdominoplasty now you'll need to have it done again later.

My doctor recommended not seeing a plastic surgeon until near goal. Also, to be in the best health before this big surgery your weight should be stable with very good nutrition. My weight was steady for six months prior to my abdominoplasty (tummy tuck).

Good luck!

Sue

I can tell you and almost certain you will need it done again. I had it done at 267lbs, before I ever had the band. Doctor sugested it due to large over hang(you know the belly that hangs waydown past your woo woo) It was causing alot of back trouble. He took 11lbs of skin flap off. 2yrs later I had the band and although my lower tummy has held up pretty well I still need another to get rid of extra skin on upper belly. It would be an inverted T. So unless the extra skin is causing you trouble I would wait, or you can almost count on multiple surgeries.

But imagine that pannus gone! How much more mobility would that give you, how much easier would it be to exercise etc? It will definitely need to be "fine tuned" later on, but for now, they can lop off the bulk of it and you worry about a belly button and such later on.

As long as you're healthy and strong enough for the surgery and can afford it, I'd go for it. It will make your weight loss much easier, and much more visible too.

If you search out Losing Jusme, that's what she did. She doestnt post anymore but was thrilled with her results.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
