First visit 6 days before surgery!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys-

I am flying in, and having all my exams 6 days before my surgery. Some quick questions-

first,

liquid diet- HELP!!! will I be starving (its not the clear liquid but anything you can get up a straw..)? Does anyone know where I can find out what I can buy for Protein Shakes out of the US, or in general?

Is it scary? Should I make my last vows and be really good the next couple of weeks?

What do you feel like after surgery?

So good to find a whole bunch of people doing the same thing!

Good luck to you all:cool:

I'm sorry I don't know any places outside of the US but have you thought of just taking your powder with you? oh wait that's probablt not allowed at the airports, huh? There are people on here from all over thew world. someone's got to have a suggestion for you. I love the smoothie King Gladiator shake...can;t have any of the others ones they sell on the pre-op. Also I found one at a nutrition store called DESSERT that I use too. Good luck!

Thanks so much for responding- i will be here overseas till a week before my surgery so I need to have already started my liquids a week before I leave. I went to the city and found eggwhite Protein Powder things which look:tongue_smilie:.... I think Id rather get a lil less Protein and not die of starvation/nausea.... although I am concerned about losing here which people say is eithre as a result of protein loss or anesthesia or weight loss etc so i do want to get in my protein.... (If its as a result of rapid weight loss Im not that heavy so Im praying it wont happen... what happened to you?)

My surgery is in four days. I've lost about 17 pounds on the pre-op. I drink those shakes religiously. I don't want to chance losing hair. You have to play with the blender and find the right blend for making them taste ok. I find it better when I make it thick. Also, I think that if you eat fish and green veggies, you'll be ok. Stay away from bread, Pasta, sauce, rice, bananas, and carrots. They're not good for the pre-op.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
