forgot to ask.. how long in the hospital?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I forgot to ask my doctor how long I am in the hospital? Is it overnight or is it in and out surgery? (sorry if this is a dumb question) just wondering! Thanks so much Heidi

It could be either way, call your office tomorrow and ask what your insurance and the doctor says. I was overnight in the hospital and wish I had gone straight home to my own bed!!!!

My surgeon does an overnight stay. I am personally glad about this because I had a serious blood clot issue 5 months ago and like the idea of being in the hospital for 24 hours. Also I have had allergic reactions to pain killers in the past and would not want to have a bad reaction at home. My insurance lists the surgery as day surgery but if "medically necessary" will cover admittance. Since my doctor considers is a requirement that's were I will be.

I was the second case of the day. My doctor said if I was doing well he would release me that day, but that I might spend the night. He did say if my surgery had been later in the day I would have spent the night.

I checked in a 6:30am. I went home around 5pm. I believe that out-patient is considered anything less than 24 hours.

The only problem I had with going home was when I woke up in the middle of the first night and the pain meds had worn off. I could not sit up on my own! Was very glad DH was there to help me up and get me more meds.

Otherwise I was very happy to be home.

It depends on the doctor and your insurance. Mine (both) prefer an overnight stay. It was billed, however, as observation, because I was discharged within a 23-hour window.

I was glad for the time to get my bearings, figure out how I responded to activities, and so on. Having an evening and night without anyone expecting anything of me, and no cats walking across my abdomen, was nice!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
