why does your hair fall out?

Recommended Posts

ive been hearing a lot that once youve been banded, after a few months your hair starts to fall out....does that happen to most people or is it rare? also, why do you think that happens? is it a Vitamin deficiency or something of that nature?

just wondering!

A lot of people will tell you it is from not eating enough Protein. Others say that it is your body reacting to the anesthesia. I noticed a little bit of thining around my temples about 3 months out. But I really could not tell you if it was real or if I had just convinced myself that I was going to lose my hair because so many people talked about it here.

Anyway, it never seemed to progress and I stopped worrying about it. I drink at least one shake a day because I am so tight in the morning. I think that the fact that I concentrated on Protein so much helped avoid the Hair loss.< /p>

Reminds me: I need to have a hair cut this week.

It actually is your body not getting enough Protein. The anesthesia is out of your body in 48 hours so I don't think that it could possibly be that. I haven't had any problems with Hair loss and I am almost 4 months out. Just make sure that you take your Vitamins and consume enough Protein.< /p>

it doesnt happen to everyone and its not ALL your hair. my docs preop program they say when it thins its from lack of Protein. If you need the band..especially for health reasons dont worry about your hair. a good cosmetologist can do wonders...and you'll be thin/healthy.

I've read it from lack of Protein. I'm not going to worry too much about it, at least I'll be skinny with thin hair! :)

There isn't a real consensus on it, though the people who lose the least seem to be the ones with the higher Protein intake. Still, I know lots of people who get 100+ g protein/day, and lose a bit of hair.

I think it's probably a combination of things. One of which is the sheer trauma of surgery. hair is shed in weird patterns, sometimes. The body holds on to it during pregnancy, for example; the hairs normally shed on a day-to-day basis are not. Then there's a mass shedding postpartum. It seems like tons is being lost, but really---it's just the amount that would have been lost anyway. I kind of wonder whether surgery triggers a similar phenomenon. For those with good nutritional status, the loss really seems to be of this nature---alarming, but not resulting in any sort of visible change. (For those deficient in Protein, it seems to continue.)

Do make sure you get adequate protein (and by adequate, I mean, quite possibly, more than the amount required by some surgeons) and take a good Multivitamin. That's pretty good hair insurance.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
