I know the feeling, 1 was banded 12/16. The first week was okay, weeks 2-5 were iffy...I started filling my time with other things, spending more time playing with my son, spending more time here....I've always loved to cook and felt lost for a while but now I'm back into it. I've decided I used to focus on quantity of food and now I'm focused on quality. I spend more time cooking better, healthier, more complex food meals. I used to thing I loved food, but I actually think I loved eating.... It is okay to feel how you do but you have to find a healthy way to deal with it or you're going to obsess about food 24/7 and that is just not healthy. Good luck, it gets better!

I'm in the same boat as you, I was banded the same day, and I'm feeling the same way. I find myself thinking about what I will be able to eat, I'm Hungry! And it is really hard when everyone else around you are eating, regular food and all you can eat is soup! But everything I have learned on here is that it gets easier...

I understand also. I was banded on 2/4/10 and Im on mushy foods now. All I can think about is the next time I can "EAT".

Anticipating that this will be a problem for me, I've started seeing a therapist who specializes in bariatric counseling.

Will work to find tools to help me thru this journey. Best of luck to all of us - we'll share our hints and skills.

Yes I didnt realize how much I thought about food. I just hope I find a new interest in my life that will help me stop thinking about food. I am so scared to fail.

How are you are dealing with always thinking about food?

I had my surgery in August 2009. I have my days where I miss eating some things that I used to eat. But I walk 3 miles a day, which gives me so much more energy. And I also knit instead of thinking about food. I think the best thing is to find other things to occupy your mind. I think for most of us food was a top priority not it isn't. I think I'm getting back to thinking normally, I was cleaning and hadn't realized how hungry I was until my stomack wouldn't stop growling. Eliminating sweets/sugar has helped a lot with my cravings. And of course I'm losing so much more weight. I was at 220 when I had my surgery and I'm at 165 now. This really does work, its the best thing I've done for myself in a very long time!

Sharon,

Food leaves a big void, there's no doubt about it. Filling it is akin to reconstructing our lives, and that takes some time. The suggestions people have given you here

(finding other things to occupy your mind, seeing a therapist, spending more time with family and friends, spending more time cooking healthy meals) are good ones.

For now, I hope you can also counter your despair with the knowledge that you have made a major, dramatic step toward banishing a kind of behavior that I can only assume was harmful and painful and negative for you. After all, what lead you to undergo this procedure? It's not a common step. Did you have feelings of helplesness and despair about your weight? Did you experience a frightening lack of control over your eating, and your never-ending hunger? Hopefully, having had this surgery, your hunger will lessen, your need to eat will decrease and you will know the blessed relief of no longer having a 300 pound gorilla on your back shouting, "EAT, EAT, EAT" in your ear 24 hours a day. That's how it was for me. Hang in there. The results will come, and you will feel like all your pain was worth it.

Much congratulations bandpal. Your reply was so well written and heart-felt.

Living only to eat - what a horrible life.

Time to seize the opportunity to live life fully and with grace.

Good Luck, Joyce in Kansas! I am in Kansas, and have my date set in April.

I have the same thinking as you, and they are getting me a nutritionist to help me start thinking about how I need to start eating for the rest of my life!

I have been thinking about lapband and it is scarey to think I may not be able to do it because my life always seems to center around food. I am so tired of being tired though and I want to be able to have a normal life, able to play with my grandkids, take a walk without huffing and puffing. There are so many posotive people on this forum so it is very encouraging. I am going to have to sell myh truck to finance it but I am very willing to do that if it gets my life back.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
