when to start excercise after surgery

Recommended Posts

1When did you begin to exercise? 13 days have passed since my banding and I've lost 14 pounds so far without any exercise yet. Hoping to start an exercise routine this week if my bruised incisions cooperate. Feeling good enough now that I can start - no pain meds for 4 days now. I get to switch from full liquid to soft foods Sunday. Looking forward to new flavors

My doctor has an excercise physiologist on staff and he ok'd me to start back light exercise at my 2 week post op visit. But, they were really heavy on exercise pre band and I've been exercising conistantly for 3 years prior to band. They said the more you exercise before band, the more quickly you can pick it back up post band. At my 1 month visit they said I could do everything except ab work. I still have a weight lifting restriction, nothing over 20lbs.

I guess it would depend on your physical condition before hand and how you're healing, so I would just check with your doctor first.

First, please speak to your doctor about your personal situation.

Currently my excercise is an hour of moderate lap swimming. My surgeon said I could return to swiming 2 weeks post op. I asked if I could go to the gym during those two weeks and do the treadmill and he said yes.

I was walking the neighborhood the day after I got home. Walk, walk, walk. As far as anything else I agree that after two weeks I was ready to do more. After 6 weeks I was completely back to normal.

I was walking within the first couple of days, and back to my full walking regimen (several miles a day) very, very quickly--by 10 days or so. I'm at 4 weeks, and was just cleared to return to the gym (for resistance training/weights) this coming week.

Congrats on being able to really start working. The pounds are going to fall of you!!!

Thanks! I just got back from my first workout, and while I'm not quite where I was preop, I was able to get a pretty darn good workout in! It actually felt really good---hopefully I'll think the same in the morning LOL

I was told the exact same thing. Walk a minimum of 30 minutes daily following surgery and full exercise in 6 weeks. Make sure the Doc gives you the okay and there aren't any contraindications. Barb

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
