I was banded 2/9/10 here I am four days after surgery super hungry. Is there anything I can eat? Did everyones MD have them on a clear liquid diet for 1-2 weeks after? I feel really hungry and weak. Popsicles, broth and Jello are just not cutting it....any suggestions? Can I have mashed potatoes or cream of wheat?

I had mashed potatoes (really thin) a few days post op. And Protein Shakes the day of. It is really hard to get in enough Protein if you aren't drinking protein shakes. You might want to check w/ your doc and see if you can add something other than Clear Liquids.< /p>

Please ask your doctor.........I know they vary in their answers but I think to error on the cautious side is best.

I'm in the same boat as you - I was banded on the 8th and am hungry for the first time today. Everything I seen on TV and my family cooked was killing me........I have zero energy too.

I'm looking forward to getting to the full liquids stage but I'm afraid of my stomaches reaction........I have read a few posts that indicate some people have had issues and have thrown up, etc.... when they try to go to the next stage.......this is scaring me into following my doctors orders and letting my stomache heal as much as possible.

Good luck and remember you are not alone!

You really might want to call them and get clarification. Skim milk isn't clear, if they allow that they MIGHT allow shakes, thin smoothies, etc...but I wouldn't do it without talking to them first. Every doc is different and they have specific reasons for what they do...

Welcome to bandster hell, it sucks but is temporary and it does get better!!!!

I was on clear liquids the day of surgery. For 2-3 days after surgery I was to be on liquids, basically nothing thicker than Tomato Soup. Then purees for 2-3 days. The doctor described a puree as something that was still pourable. If you pour a bit on a plate, it should not hold its shape. It would be more of a thick milkshake consistency.

Then 2-3 days of mushies...mashed potato consistency. Then 2-3 days of soft food but no need to mash. Towards the end of the 2nd week I was back on solid foods.

I've heard others here say their docs had them back on solids within a couple days after surgery. One lady said she was on liquids for a month after surgery. As far as I can tell, it's arbitrary based on the doctor.

I could have anything that could go through a straw after three days--they key was I shouldn't need to chew. Homemade Soups that were blended did the trick for the hunger. There is also an egg custard or flan that is sold in the dairy case that I ate quite a bit. Not lo cal but it had a lot of Protein and I lost quite a bit of weight anyway as I recuperated.

I had a lot of Soups and shakes right away. After about a week I had some Cream of Wheat and Greek yogart. You should call your doctor and see what he will allow. Best wishes!!!

My doctor had me on only broth, herbal tea, Jello, and Water for the 3 days after surgery. I thought I was gonna die of hunger. I did call the dieticians to check if anything else was allowed (like the clear Protein shots you can buy now) and they said NO! But, I was allowed to eat normal food starting on day 4 with very few restrictions. I didn't have to do a mushy stage.

Now, that I am getting fills, they want me to do the same for 72 hours after each fill, but they will allow the clear Protein Shots too. That helps a lot, but I haven't actually gone 72 hours on only those liquids after a fill yet. This time, by the second day, I tried Soup, yogurt and cottage cheese. And, by the third day, I had veggie burgers, fish, and veggies.

I'm sure they would not be happy with me, but the 3 days without eating just doesn't work for me. I take it slow, chew chew chew, and if I was to have any problems, I'd go back to Clear Liquids. But, I haven't had any problems yet.

I am also 4 days post op, and I am allowed to have Water, broth, skim milk, slim fast shakes and thinned creamy Soups. The difference with me, though, is that I don't feel hungry. I'm doing all I can just to get a bottle of Water down each day. I've had 3 sips of a slim fast now as I type, and it's painful to me. I do feel weak, but definitely not hungry. You may want to talk to your doc...could it be that your band has slipped and it's too high for you to feel any restriction?

Hope this helps - Good luck!!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
